James Cameron's Avatar

I've just seen it tonight in 3D and it's a fantastic movie, I'm sure Mr Cameron'll bring some Oscars to his home for dinner.

I thought it would have plenty of american things, like the ones they used to do in Hollywood, you know what I'm talking, but I really liked the story and the way reality of the photography.

I hope they release it soon for BlueRay

Actually, the reviews I'd read panned the plot and highlighted the graphics.

Yes, it is a story we've heard before but obviously some folks (like Herr Cameron) feel that we have not learned enough from the telling of that particular story in all it's many variations. The parts of me that ache for what my forefathers (that one ancient branch of the family that is more than 3 generations in the US) did regarding settling in the US and the disposition of Native Americans recognizes the correlation to Avatar.

As similar things are still going on to this day, it does indeed seem a story which still has some teaching from which we all can learn.

No, I don't know what "american things, like the ones they used to do in Hollywood" you're talking about... perhaps you care to elaborate?

not been to see it yet but if it is another OTT story line like Independence Day, Day after Tomorrow, Armageddon and 2012 which are all carbon copy stories I am not sure if I can be arsed to sit through it - cool graphics or no cool graphics

Ha. Funny that. Exactly my thoughts too.

Nope, not that sort of story...

More of a "be careful of taking over someone else's land and disrupting their cultural ties to said land" along with "you (American accents prevail in the movie) are greedy money grubbers who destroy everything for your own profit" type story line rather than "the world is ending" story line.

Of course, I'll not spoil it for you by revealing the ending though...

It's also earned a billion dollars in 17 days, the fastest any film has brought in that amount:

the story line is way better than Independence Day (which was good only as a cheesy show with good CG but had huge number of scientific errors) or Armageddon

The story is good, CG is great but I actually loved the world J.Cameron created the most. The whole Pandera world together with the different regions, creatures and their interaction is great. I won't exaggerate and try to compare it with Lord of the Ring's Middle Earth since Pandera is not as extensive/detailed but it came quite close to it.

I was rather prejudiced b4 seeing the movie but afterwards I just fell in love with it.

Definitely worth a try

have a virtual thanks ...... saw this over the weekend & tbh, it is exactly what you have just said ... unobtanium ....

... but it does have the traditional hero and love story line, does it not?

big American blockbusters always do which is why i hate big American block busters

Seriously has anyone seen 2012? my family was watching it earlier last month and i was listening in the background while i was doing something far more exciting like cooking! anyway to me it sounded like it was an amalgamation of independence day, Armageddon and Day after Tomorrow, almost word for word in some parts. Why??? so uncreative and dull

I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone, but this gives you a rough idea...

Question for people who saw the film at the Pathé in Dietlikon: I heard that at that cinema there was no 15-minute interval in the middle of the film. Is this true?

Damn, I planned to see it at the IMAX in Luzern but they don't show it! Seems like I'll have to go to London!

Hi

Can anyone who has seen the film confirm something with the subtitles. If the movie is shown in VO, are the subtitles for the na'vi shown in English or local language e.g. French/German etc.

I think when I went to see Angels and Demons that the Italian spoken sections were not subtitled in English, but they were subtitled in the local languages.

Many Thanks

German and French at Sihlcity

Ditto at the Metropol.

Thanks for the update. That was what I expected.

Did anyone see the film, and were unable to understand the French and German subtitles? Did you feel you missed much?

Thanks again

Don't bother - the Imax in London is fully booked for months!

No, not really - it's not Shakespeare.

OK thanks - :-)
