Can someone help with the the largest French hypermarket/out of town supermarket near the Basel/France border? I'm looking for the largest (it doesn't have to be that close to the border as I'm driving Metz to Basel anyway), just something easy off the autoroute and mega big so I can get everything I need in one swoop!!!
I'd suggest the Geant store in St Louis......either take the 604 bus from Schifflande to the centre (12 min - 1.10 Euro fare) ......or drive across the border into the town centre ...at the main lights turn left and its 300 yds on the right.
French part of Switzerland, exit first junction after entering the motorway from Geneva going east towards Lausanne to divonne les bains, then follow the signs to Gex, beyond which you find this...
Besides, ftangftang is correct, the biggest one near Basel is Géant in Saint-Louis (Take Elsässerstrasse, cross the border, stay on same road/Avenue de Bâle), it's on the very end of Saint-Louis to your left.
Or cross the border at Burgfelden (Western end of the number three tram), then turn right once you get to a t-junction. A little further down, at a roundabout, you'll find Géant.
Friends tell me there is one bigger than those in St Louis about 10km north of the border if you take the main route out towards Strasbourg. I can't recall what it is called though.
also in St Louis (just north going out out of town) - e Leclerc is pretty big and has pretty much everything, also various other largish stores in the same area, pet store, electrical, sports, etc. As other have said Geant Casino is also worth a look
Carrefour is indeed HUGE but about 30km away. The one that is nearer is the Hyper U at Sierentz, about 10km north of Basel, just off the motorway.
There is a LeClerc in Blozheim in addition to the one just north of St Louis, although I tend to prefer the Geant Casino. It even has a little English section.
on the autoroute between metz and luxembourg there is a super-mega hyper market called cora. not only do they have "everything" food and non food, but they also have a "food court" like in the usa. one central dining area and about 20 or so different kinds of foods offered surrounding the dining area. self-service of course. macdo, pizza, chinese, italian, asian, and ice cream etc.
If you are asking about a big grocery store that is just off the highway, the biggest one just off the highway AND on the way from Metz to Basel (that I know about) is
Carrefour in Mulhouse...
There are a few in Saint Louis but then you need to know how to get around a bit in Saint-Louis. Not difficult, but if you don't want to bother with it then...
Carrefour in Mulhouse is the biggies, easiest and quickest based on what you asked for...
Would u please let me know if it is possible to get there by train+bus?
Just asked SBB in Basel, the round ticket from Basel-Mulhouse is 22 Francs, not bad though, but have no idea how to get the Carrefour after arriving the train station, can't find detail public transport info via Google Map,
If you don't have a car, as I don't, then just stick with Geant in St Louis.
You can either take Tram 11 to the border and walk, which I do at the moment as the monthly ABO thing covers it, or go to Shifflande and take the French bus to St Louis centre. Or cycle, which I will do as soon as I sort out my new bike.
Ok, if you REALLY want to get to Carrefour by public transport....
Train to Mulhouse
Tram number 1 from station to Porte Jeune
Tram number 2 from Porte Jeune to Nouveau Bassin
Bus 22 from Nouveau Bassin to Centre Commercial.....and there you are
But, adrianlondon is right....Geant in St Louis is MUCH easier and closer, or you can also go to Leclerc, which others have mentioned early on...you can take the French 604 bus there from Schifflande, but be warned, the bus only takes euro coins now and will cost you 1.10 each way.
