Looking for American Food in Switzerland

I am looking for several foods from America that I simply can't find here in Switzerland AT ALL. My son and I have only been here since August but we can't find a single jar of DILL pickles, not a single bag of Cheetos, pumpkin pie, diet Dr. Pepper, a Chinese restaurant, or a Mexican restaurant. My son is incredibly homesick and I would LOVE to provide him with at least a small piece of home. Does anyone have the inside track on any or, and this I might love you forever for, all of these things please? THANKS!!!!

Is dill pickle really that different from cornichons? (Honest question).

Manor would have Dr Pepper I think. Every second restaurant around here seems to be chinese but I've never heard of the place you state as your location

Yours is a common problem, you should search on the forum to find some answers. I guess it's hard for your son, so good luck.

dill pickles are very different from Cornichon ( IMO )

others will no doubt have other suggestions perhaps up near Zurich way ( I looked on a map )

but the American Market down here in GE, and also Nyon now takes online orders and ships

the sad bit?.. kosher dills are outta stock at the moment.

One of my American friends was doing cartwheels a couple of weeks ago. Apparently some larger Coops are now stocking Diet Dr Pepper (or "light", or some other name)

Yes, dills are different. I'd love to find some myself, as my fridge is full of sorry substitutes and wishful thinking.

p.s.. American market is the only place in this country I have EVER found pumpkin ( in a tin )

I'm sure I saw it in Globus (Basel) last week. Never looked at the price though.

Do you think, taking your son to a near by Mcdonalds will be a quick solution?

There's a great burger place called Cindy's Diner - it's American Style, but it has a mini mart adjoining it where you might get lucky with some American treats. It's where I get my Skippy and Dr Pepper.

this american market is going to be my new favorite thing!!! i just had some skippy peanut butter shipped over here because, well i am american and needed a taste of home...this is going to be a much easier solution....

lady bird... for a true taste of home ( I see you're also from Boston ) you'll have to order some "Fluff"

Buy a chunk of pumpkin, microwave it in a plastic bag for 15-20min, let cool, remove seeds and skin, and use pulp as you would use canned.

Made one yesterday this way.

Tom

Ehm, are you sure that you can just microwave a plastic bag like that?

Yes.

I use the zip-lock bags Migros sells.

Tom

Don't they melt?

No, they won't melt. If you use proper cling film, you can even oven bake it.

American Food Avenue is another site you could try.

There is a Thai market near Zurich Hbf that sells root beer, and various things. Some of the bigger Coop's do have varied American foods, just as Karstadt (high-end German store) stocks things like Reese's, Dr. Pepper, spray can cheese, etc.

It depends how bad you need it. Maybe check out casttv.com for some favorite TV shows, and pop some popcorn. Maybe that would be the trick without doling out highway-robbery-prices for a can of A&W. Good luck!
