OK, I know the mattress sizes are different, and if I send my U.S. mattress to Switzerland, I'll have to order my sheets from the U.S. I can live with that. -- But the issue is the price of Swiss mattresses, which research has shown to be much more than in the U.S. I'm not talking one mattress. I'm talking about a family with six mattresses, at Swiss prices! -- So, my question is: should I have all the mattresses shipped with the other household goods, or would the cost of shipping SO outweight the savings of not buying new mattresses in Switzerland that it wouldn't be worth it? Does anyone have mattress-shipping experience ... or mattress-buying experience in Switzerland? Thanks. jj
I would give anything to have my U.S. mattress . That is something I miss the most. If possible bring it, I think a good nights sleep is worth all the money in the world. And sheets in the U.S. are cheaper and more varieties also. I encourage you to bring it from my experiences with the mattresses here.
I think if you are having problems with your mattress here, you bought a cheap one.
Knowing that half of our lives, (more for some), are spent on our mattresses and the condition of our backs and necks are directly related to the mattress, you should spend what you need to ensure you survive years with one. We bought a 2m x 2m for CHF1600 and is like sleeping on a marshmallow (well supported one). Prior to, we had cheap ones and always had problems, since then, we have never experienced true comfort!
Some thigns can be skimped on, but a mattress, never... IMHO
No, we have bought the best, it is just that I like my big King thick box springs and all mattress and my thick egg crate that went on top of it. It was luxurious. From even my experience visiting people all over France and Switzerland they are not to into bed comfort. Even all the hotels in Europe are not to keen into great beds. U.S. rules where this is concerned. The difficulty here would be to get my king in our elevator it would never fit.
Then you are sleeping in the wrong hotels and have bought the wrong mattress At the end of the day it is all about personal preference and your shape and weight. I have found the continental European System to be so much better than the English system - which is more or less identical to the US system. I recall having a mattress that was a foot or more thick in the UK and here I sleep very well on one that is less than 20cm thick. I too prefer the sprung type over the latex but I find the big difference is what you lay it on. Here the "lattenrost" (can't translate doesn't exist...) system is really good especially if you take two singles - it can be "configured" to fit your body. That said the things are not cheap.
If your boss is really of the eccentric type I would suggest getting him an electrically adjustable bed. One where you can raise the head for breakfast in bed etc... HE might just like the novelty!
You've never experienced discomfort until you use a Thai mattress. We got our current ones from Ikea. Top of the range and they weren't cheap, but I have never slept so well. The bed bases have adjustable slats depending on the level of firmness you want and the mattresses.....................
we changed over from the standard Swiss mattress (too soft) to Tempur with the seperate underframes suggested by Richard. Pricy at 2,000 chuffs for a double, but the bliss of sleeping so well is well worth the outlay.
if you are interested & would like to follow up on this, I have a man that can ... so drop me a PM.
I think you may want to take into consideration the fact that finding the right mattress/lattenrost combination can be a very timely process. I can't count the number of combinations that my husband and I tried out in the store. I think this process is very important and one that a busy boss may not want to deal with. I'm sure you could find a high end store that would deliver different ones for your boss to try out at home too (we did all ours in the store) which may be more convenient, but a longer process.
Another note, most swiss style beds are very low to the ground. I like this style, but some people don't. Though I would imagine that the Tempurpedic beds may not be....are they Polorise? I know they've got some extraordinarily tall ones in the U.S.
We love our bed, but it was a significant investment- both time and money.

we have ours on a custom made wooden jobby from Slovakia, as I hate low beds. Tempur mattresses are probably twice the depth of a norm al mattress here.
another approach is to talk with some of the high end hotels, they sometimes can arrange to import US style box beds, there is a thread on this, so will try & scrounge it out.
I decided I am just picky, I could be an eccentric millionare. Nothing here will compare to my huge California king, high off the ground sleigh bed. I also import my pillows. I hate the pillows here and take mine when going to friends houses for overnight visits here in Europe. I guess this should be in the thread "What I miss the most"
I much prefer my bed here, it took some getting used to buying a lower bed then forking out for the slat thingies then buying a mattress that was made up of layers of foam and camel hair!! but it is the comfiest bed I have ever slept in - we also have an Ikea sofa bed and we bought the top end mattress for it, all our guests comment on how comfortable it is and say they have the best nights sleep here, I have a terrible nights sleep when I have to go back to the UK and sleep on spring mattresses
The pillows here are atrocious. I finally found one that didn't have me feeling like my head was on a rock. And they're really expensive as well. I'm planning on bringing back a pillow or two on my next trip.
That's not exactly on point though, is it? The OP's question was re shipping vs buying Swiss new, not where to find a high bed. Now if you want to call some others out for getting off-topic, that's another story...
What is really comes down to is (1) who's footing the bill for shipping, and (2) how long do you expect to be here.
If your company is paying for shipping, then no problem there. If you have a set moving/shipping allowance and you'll have to leave other desired items at home, then that raises another set of questions and priorities (e.g., what gets left behind, are these items cheaper to replace in Switzerland than mattresses, etc.).
How old are said mattresses? Are some due for replacement anyway? Will you want to ship them home at the end of your stay?
Of course you will be able to find comfortable and uncomfortable mattresses here, just like in the US. It just takes some time to shop around and find ones you like.
When we moved here 10 years ago, it was only supposed to be for 2 years so we left our mattresses in the US. If we had known we were going to be here longer, it might have been a different story.
In any case, I think you need to look at it beyond a strict cost-of-shipping vs. cost-of-buying-new decision.
