Media Markt replaces Melectronics

But got to admit I like Media Markt more. Bit more progressive in my opinion.

Less competition is never a good thing.

Can’t say I agree. Abandonned MediaMarkt ages ago, had the impression there was lots of junk but mainly because they used to sell older than last years models, claiming it was a great deal.

I was not a big melectronics client. But I remember last year when my laptop was falling apart and BlackFriday came up, I thought ah, how practical. But on offer were only models older, slower, smaller … just worse than my broken one. As I simply needed a laptop I went to melectronics and got a model better (younger, LOL) than mine that fulfilled all my demands - and I’m not the modest type - for a super low price, it was delivered the next day. It was “in Aktion” but they didn’t even mention BlackFriday and they don’t officially claim to deliver the next day. They just did it.

Replaces? Buy out? Takeover?

Any chance of a link together with the initial post?

Unless major aspects changed this is anything but news. It was announced months ago that MM would acquire roughly half of the Melectronic markets.

absolutely. But they found noone better than Mediamarkt??

Migros are selling off most of their non food stores.
Some of the electronics stores will become MediaMarkt and others will close.

Dosenbach-Ochsner will take over some of the SportX stores and others will close. We have a huge store here but sadly it’s one of the ones due to close.

Migros got one of the big advisory companies in (McKinsey I think) to help them rationalise their business and apparently selling off lots of stuff was the best they could come up with.

An international company with no knowledge of the true meaning of Migros to Switzerland.
Sure the “Migros-children” as we’re called here will get used to it. But if Migros is only an other grocery-store, we might as well go to an other. :unamused:
The Swiss whine before and during a change. But once it’s done they just move on. Being a bit unforgiving they can be pretty consequent at moving on.

More stores will disappear as people continue buying online from non-brick and mortar businesses.

Problem is non-brick and mortar businesses have disappeared too. Many of my long-term suppliers are gone.
One day amazon will be the only one to order from. At least there are a million little suppliers offering on amazon

Digitec all the way.

Migros had grown into too many side businesses they had no clue about. It is a logical move. But of course every half-respectable board cannot decide this on their own but needs smartasses like McKinsey to help them.

The stupid thing about MediaMarkt is they don’t accept credit cards. Not to mention they are overpriced.

Agree with Komso , Digitec / Galaxus 4ever.

Digitec is Migros. (at least 70% is owned by Migros).

For all those going on about brand loyalty with Migros, and Migros-Children and so on, Migros could have changed the Name Digitec/Galaxus to Migros… but they didn’t.

Before the buy-out, Digitec was the place to go for electronics goods and still is. For those goods the brand generates more buying power than Migros.

I assume online because I bought a printer toner from the shop some weeks ago.

Also, Tom’s right digitec galaxus is Migros.

In 2012, Migros came on board. What was that like for you?

Florian Teuteberg: We were actively looking for investors, so we weren’t surprised to get the offer. Naturally, the decision to give up some of our independence was a difficult one. Migros gives us a lot of freedom, but we didn’t know that then.

Oliver Herren: I also had my doubts. Because freedom is so important to us, we came to an agreement with the Administrative Board on parity, and we included it in the contract.

I really like the Pick-M-Up service. Last time I bought a phone from Digitec, pick it up at local Migros against signature. Don’t worry about a package left at the building door by the Post.

@Castro if M-Electronics were competitive in first place, they would have not closed shop. So, nothing lost. If any the competition was among Migros subsidiaries, and M-Electronics lost against Digitec-Galaxus.

Yes. Digitec needed capital to expand and Migrow stepped in. As far as I know Digitec is still run by its founders who actually know something about online sales and is not managed by Migros. M-Electronics was really not making any sense.

Interested tidbit from the interview:

Florian Teuteberg: Our greatest adversary at that time was the Mediamarkt Group in Zurich. They really didn’t like us, and when they realised that we were becoming serious competitors, they put a lot of pressure on manufacturers to stop working with us. And that worked for a while, which forced us to import the same goods from abroad, especially in the area of consumer electronics.

A reminder that big companies play dirty.

They should have closed shop when they went into Digitec/Galaxus Btw. it was never a secret that those two became Migros. microspot (gone now) and Interdiscount are Coop. Imo Migros did better here. Specially when they gave up microspot instead of Interdiscount when they should have done it the other way around.

They should also have closed DoIt&Garden when they took over franchise of Obi. It simply makes no sense to double track.
DoIt&Garden was much better than Obi back in them days though but hey, that’s life. Coop took over Jumbo and immediately gave up Coop Bau&Hobby. Which is too bad actually because it was better than Jumbo is.

I didn’t know that was possible. I guess the Fr. 50.00 minimum order still stands though?

Err, yes, they do. Both online and at the checkout. Our local one (Aigle) recently doubled in size a couple of years ago, I use it more than any of the others.

Not IME. Prices are competitive with Digitec, stuff not in stock (like the laptop I bought there recently, but insisted on not paying the 30chf setup fee, given I’d have had to wipe it and start again anyway, which oddly meant I couldn’t take any of the ones in the shop) can be ordered in for pickup with faster/more reliable delivery. In that case, as it happens, I found a better one for significantly less money, which for some reason the sales droid had failed to mention.

I don’t remember. But phones are way above 50 francs anyway

Oddly, we didn’t/don’t have a migros DoIt anywhere within reach, so when they closed the Obi we lost one option. Thankfully we do have a Hornbach not much further away though.

As for Coop, our local big Coop shop has retained all of its large Brico+Loisirs section and continues to offer things not available in the local Jumbo just a km away, which has also stayed in operation. So we’ve got two of them, but with a slightly different focus
