Mom Jeans & Muffin Tops

At the risk of sounding like a fashion non-aby, I am trying to find a new pair of jeans that are somewhat fashionable, but I have no intention of showing off my underwear. What does one do?

With a figure that doesn't quite match up to that of Angelina Jolie, what does one wear?

It seems that Jeans fall into 2 categories - that which would provide me with a muffin top, or the dreaded Mom* Jeans.

What do you guys wear when not going to work? Or, more to the point, what would you be least likely to slag-off?

*I feel the name deserves to remain in its original spelling, as it was probably made in the US.

Now you make me worry whether I look like a mom or a muffin.

Have you tried on a few pairs of Sisley, Benetton and Esprit jeans that aren't cut too low?

The muffin top seems to come about when people wear jeans which are a bit too tight which makes the excess flab spill over the top so jeans which are a decent fit might solve that problem.

Also, this season's tops aren't as short as they are normally so one that falls lower, below the waistline of your jeans will hid any lumps or bumps above the belt line.

"Mom-jeans" are just... [ shudder ]

Nothing wrong with a muffin top. Certainly better than mom-jeans .

The "traditional" jeans cut first brought to us by Levis is what comes out to that "Mom Jean" look, relaxed fit in the hips and thighs... very comfy but not terribly flattering.

There are A LOT of styles of jeans out there, not just what you see in the stores for any given season, if you go to a store that actually specializes in jeans or has a wide selection of jeans for different body types, you'll find that it's not all just an "either or" situation.

A particular way to avoid the "Mom Jean" look is to go with boot cut or even flare as those tend to be tighter in the hip and thigh but with some room down to the ankle. This gives shape to the hiney AND has the added benefit of giving the illusion of height - at 5'4" I like a bit more height sometimes.

Bon Prix catalog is a good source to check out different styles of jeans and how they'll look... even if you decide that catalog buying is not for you, you can print / snip a picture to take to a shop to ask if they have something similar.

Hey thanks Peg, I love Bon Prix! I will check the prices, I sued to buy from them in NL

**curtsey**

I have picked up a couple things from them. I've noticed that it seems the sizing chart is "off" if you go by measurements. Using their chart the stuff I got was about 2 sizes too large, meanwhile, using what I know of size conversions between US sizes to "local" (ladies size 18 US is size 48 for example) worked out a lot better.

You said it all!

With the exception of Angelina Jolie herself, I think no one else out there has that figure! I digress.

I used to think that jeans fall into those 2 categories too - made even worse when skinny jeans got so popular. The trick is to find a shop that makes jeans right for you. Stick to it and never let go! For example, I was pleasantly surprised that the Esprit jeans here for me required NO alterations (and I am a midget) and the cut rather flattering so I've never really bothered looking elsewhere for jeans ever since. woop woop.

Muffin tops will always be there for mere mortals like us but its how well we hide it with clothes. I usually try to balance what I am wearing - example: tight at the bottom, loose on top, vice versa. Not talking about frumpy tops either, but layers, vertical stripes etc.

I see nothing wrong with a little bit of muffin . Those other creations just make me shudder.

It isn't the muffin itself that bugs me, it is the thought of always having to hike those things up after sitting down... and the "plumber view" that is given when sitting down / squatting in the first place.

A fair amount of muffin tops (man, that's a horrible, but perfectly apt phrase) come about from wearing too tight of jeans, as was mentioned before. You might want to look into the pros and cons of wearing jeans with a little more stretch in them, like elasthan or other stretchy jean. These can help keep a svelt figure, but it also can, if too stretchy create a muffin top. These provide the comfort of mom jeans, and if made well, the Angelina Jolie look that is much more desirable.

Gaaaaaaah my coffee almost went on to my laptop screen!

Definitely a case of badly fitted jeans because her figure does seem decent (she has the the sembalance of a waist at least!)

Love the semi-concealed tramp-stamp of what could possibly be an image of Jesus with a halo round his head on the flickr picture. Classy...

Would like to thank you PegA for the link, but the Thanks button doesnt appear in these messages for me

No 'Thanks' are possible in the Off-Topic Forums. You just have to say a genuine thank-you if you are grateful to someone.

Try Esprit Smart fit Jeans. They seem to be a little higher but not too high. Stretch jeans seem to create a muffin top on me.

Stay away from Armani Jeans. Every time I see jeans up the b*m crack I look for the symbol - and sure enough

Not too loose, not too tight, no carrot shaped/skinny jeans please ladies. And if you go for blue jeans, don't buy dark blue, go for lighter, washed out colours.

No way, you look bigger in those tints.... Darker the better! No black
