Movie recommendations

yeah he needs to get out of Hollywood, go somewhere quiet and start again.. He knows how to make a good film but the days of the brilliant Hitchcock & that particular Hollywood machine of taste is long gone..

Totally agree. Lost was available to view online for free in the States and i got totally and absolutely hooked. In two weeks i think i watched 4 seasons. And believe me that is a lot of viewing hours. Sad really.

Re movies: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Little Miss Sunshine, The Bourne trilogy and my favorite of recent times The Lives of Others which has the best ending i think i've ever seen.

Other series dvds the bbc's Bleak House and Cranford if you like that sort of thing (which i do, obviously)

I totally agree about "The Lives of Others", it's the best film I have seen in the last 10 years. I put it in my first list (in this thread) under it's original german title "Das Leben der Anderen".

I can't stress often enough that I hated "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

BTW I've seen some people mention "Crash". I think they should specify that they mean the Paul Haggis version (2004) not the David Cronenberg version (1996). Two entirely different films with the same title.

About George Clooney...You should go and see "Burn After Reading". In it he plays a total loser (along with Brad Pitt) and they are both absolutely hilarious. Not the best film ever but worth it just to see their acting.

Crash (2004) (= L.A. Crash) will be shown tonight at 22.00 on Film4, if this is of any interest to someone...

Thanks martin I'll tape it..

1- Watched "Children of men" last night and enjoyed it.

2- V for vendetta is also a good one.

second children of men. i disagree about the lives of others though - i found it dull and too sentimental.

some highly recommended recent watching of my own:

citizen ruth

frenzy

an angel at my table

tony takitani

lord of the flies (the original one, not the 90s remake)

kao

Eastern Promises is very good given what you have said you like.

I have been to the movies quite a lot recently and have been thoroughly disappointed.

- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Could not take seriously. Just a joke and too long.

- La Classe (Entre Les Murs) - Okay, can appreciate how realistic it was, but this was just plain boring. Don't understand what all the awards were for.

- Revolutionary Road - Just blah and depressing.

- Doubt - Great acting (love Philip Seymour Hoffman), but horribly trite ending. So much buildup and drama and then a letdown.

- Slumdog Millionaire - good, but overrated.

- Vicky Christina Barcelona - Don't know how Penelope Cruz won best supporting actress Oscar for this.

- Milk - Sean Penn unquestionably deserved the best actor Oscar (really amazing), but the movie overall did nothing for me.

Anyone see The Wrestler ? Thoughts? That is next on my list.

Last good movies I can remember seeing in the theater were Juno , No Country for old Men and Burn After Reading.

Some of my all-time favorites for rental are:

- Old Boy - As good a display of raw emotion as I have witnessed in any language (movie in Korean). The story is gripping, the emotion human, and the feeling I was left with at the end of the film is one of awe. A masterpiece.

- Sideways - Hilarious. Paul Giammatti performs flawlessly. Was robbed of an academy award nomination.

- Cinema Paradiso - Truly great movies manipulate your perception of reality, suspend your disbelief, and ultimately either alter or affirm your view on life. This is such a movie. One of the most powerful, memorable endings you will ever see.

- American History X- Edward Norton gives a flawless performance as an extremely intelligent white supremacist who realizes the wrongness of his views and must then try to prevent his younger brother form going down the same route.

- Buffalo 66- Fascinating character study as well as a non-typical love story. Billy Brown's life is so terribly tragic and bizarre, you have to break the tension by cracking a laugh. Jaw dropping cinematography.

- Maria Full of Grace - It probably sounds depressing -- three girls from a village in Colombia find themselves broke, are hired as mules to smuggle drugs into New York by swallowing little condoms full of cocaine, get mixed up murderous receivers in America, and find themselves almost broke again, or worse. But this is a powerful movie that will leave you thinking.

- Run Lola Run - Riveting movie about fate.

These movies can all be found at "Les Videos" on Zahringerstrasse in Zurich. They have a great selection of films (if you are not just looking for Hollywood Blockbusters). You'll find lots of obscure titles.

Watchmen-Superheroes Movie for a 300,Sin City,Pulp Fiction,Kill Bill audience

Thoroughly enjoyable if a tad long

Hostel I and Hostel II are worth watching.

wow, you have seen alot of movies recently! i was so desparate to watch one of the oscar nominated best pics (as i had seen none, and none related to even the actor/actress nominess except batman)

so went to see Benjamin Button last week. meh. first off not a huge brad pitt fan but i am a fincher fan...

it really wasn't a fincher film...it was like a boring version of forest gump...IMO

ps. oldboy is excellent, so is 'the host' (also korean)

Yeah, I love movies. Speaking of which... would anyone be interested in starting a movie-film club in Zurich? I started one at my old job and we would get together once a month to see a movie (each month a member gets to chose the movie to see either in the theatre or a rental) and then we all go out to eat and discuss it, criticize it, rave about it, rant....whatever.... or alternatively, we would have dinner at the home of whomever chose the movie (everyone brings something to alleviate the host from cooking stress). It was really fun.

I will have to see "The Host" as you suggested swissotter. Is it from the same director as "Old Boy?"

Lastly, why is this thread under TV/Internet/Telephone? Suggest we move it to a more appropriate place.

its another director, Bong Joon-ho. (i haven't seen the host , but it kinda looks like X-files goes to Korea )

Old Boy (chan park woon) is part II of the Vengeance trilogy , so there's more of where that came from, if u like the ol' ultra-violence

movie night sounds interesting...i say go post an event for it.

"the host" is excellent, not anything like oldboy more a monster film.

I was surprised at how faithful they stayed to the graphic novel at times. One of the most unique big-budget films I've seen in a long time.

Watchmen 7.5/10

300 8.5/10

Sin City 3/10

Pulp Fiction 9.5/10

Kill Bill 5/10

just my own personal scores

Watchmen-also thought it had elements of Bladerunner(narrative, music and some visuals) and as Russkov says "unique"

There were a few missteps, but when it was good, it was really good. Dr. Manhattan's ten minutes on Mars are better than entire movies I've seen recently.
