My couchsurfer guest wants to take a trip to Vaduz today

Hi all,

I have a girl from Hong Kong staying at my place. I'd like to have 2 questions if you can help me:

- She wanted to go to Vaduz (Liechtenstein), SBB is telling us that train + bus 12 E costs 75 CHF and back. Is there a cheaper option?

- If this fails, what is there to do/see in Zürich on a rainy day like this?

She has done Bellevue-downtown-Grossmünster already.

Thanks for any help

Can you not buy her an SBB day pass ticket? How are they sold in Zurich?

I went to Vaduz once, it was incredibly boring: worse than Zurich. Send her to Bern if she gets the roaming ticket.

Thanks. She says "I want to go there because of the stamps"

Forgive me but I don't know what the hell that means

So with the 71 CHF day pass you can cross the border and go to Lichtenstein?

Passport stamps? I fear those are mostly a thing of the past in Europe, but if you ask nicely....

Why not send her to Basel instead - it's friendly, there's a river plus she can quickly cross into Germany and France for those all-important stamps

Either she wants the "exotic" stamps in her passport or she's a philatelist.

This thread is useless without pictures

Lol she does not agree to be posted

No, she means like post stamps apparently.

I have been here 5 years and have totally no idea what she's talking about

So why is Vaduz boring? Is there nothing to see?

(EDIT: "If I go to St. Gallen, is it good?")

It's boring because it's tiny, not very attractive and there's nothing much there. There is a castle, but there are lots of castles much closer to ZH.

Re. your edit: "No".

More info from Google:

Vaduz

Capital of Liechtenstein

Vaduz is the capital of the principality of Liechtenstein and the seat of the national parliament. The town, located along the Rhine, has about 5,100 inhabitants, most of whom are Roman Catholic. Wikipedia

Apparently it's 17.3 sq. km in area.

"Most of whom are Roman Catholic" is the key here ...

And here is Vaduz from space. See if you can spot any ... well, anything, much.

So if she stays in Zurich, what should she do?

Not even the Zoo or Uetliberg seems a good option the way the clouds look right now...

I am sure the Prince lives in his castle, it isn't open to the pblic! If you visit Zurich-Oerlikon on a wet Sunday, you can get the idea of exciting things to see in Vaduz. She can buy Lichtenstein stamps in Zurich!

A lot of people think that the stamps of Liechtenstein a indeed very beautiful and they are highly collectable. https://www.philatelie.li/

Tell her that she doesn't have to go to Liechtenstein to buy them. They are sold in specialist shops in Switzerland as well.

According to this , you have to have a Halbtax to be able to purchase the 1 day travel pass?

So basically tourists have no other option than purchase full fare tickets everywhere they go?

Tourists can get the Swisspass, but you have to make a few journeys to get your moneys worth I guess.

I went to Vaduz a few months ago for the first time. It was so boring and grey that I decided to leave after a mere 2 hours.

Having explored Switzerland, I would warmly recommend Luzern. It's not too far away (closer than Basel/St. Gallen) and it's beautiful. There are plenty of museums and shops as well in case it starts to rain heavily.

if she wants to go this afternoon evening, I have a tageskarte (day pass) valid for today that I got for my family and they are not using on account of the weather. PM me or text me (sending u a PM with my number) and I can see if there is a way to get it to you.

Thanks,

KO

yes luzern a better choice.

for zurich: kunsthaus art gallery. zoo is doable in this weather and lots of fun, the masoahla hall is worth the price of entry alone and thats all indoors.

Vaduz is a bit of a stamp collectors paradise. There are stalls & shops selling stamps all over the place and not just Liechtensteiner stamps.

IIRC, in Vaduz the tourist office will charge you for the privilege of stamping your passport. I think it was 3CHF. For some reason, people think it is special. I got one and I don't remember why!

You can find it all over "the Google." ;-)

I can second some of krlock's suggestions. Also, if the weather's good the Rheinfalle is not too far, nice to look at and won't break the bank.

The "excursion ideas" link on the sbb page will also help.
