Oh For Fridays thread's sake

Hardly the case for the XK series–practically sitting on the ground when I’m in there! https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202411186402946

I don’t think I could afford to sniff the tires. So I will dream of being a BOWG.

you lost track and now you pick the wrong dreams .
You don’t want to be a BOWG, you want to have a Jag! Better steer straight for the goal. a) you might only get the first part of the dream fulfilled and b) don’t know how old you are, how much time to take such detours?

That is not a real XK like this one
The first time I drove over 120mph was in one of these over 60 years ago

@marton, What? Not the limit of 200?

you were a boring old richt man 60 years ago? Wow, what are you now?

This one is a beauty and I definitley prefer it to bossybaby’s (sorr bb).

Well, mine’s silver also, but much more comfortable.

The XK120’s original sale price in the UK was around £1,200, and in the 1960s, second-hand models were less than half that, so no, it was not a rich man’s car.

Probably better brakes also, as I remember the XK120 did not have disc brakes.

The average house price was around £2,000 in 1960 so buying a Jaguar was quite a serious financial decision - if you weren’t rich.

In the 1960s and into the 70s it was the getaway car of choice for bankrobbers and the like, at least as shown on TV, Watch any episode of The Sweeney or similar from that time and 9 times out of 10 the baddies will be in a mark 2 jag, or later an XJ6.

Their image at that time was certainly linked to wide boys, disreputable types and wannabe nouveau-riches. As for price, they typically gave performance levels on a par with more high-class models of twice the price, so yeah, they were never thought of as a real rich person’s car.

Amma 64 year old BOWG without a Jaaaaag. Got a Honda though.

A brand new Mini cost around £500 in 1960 so a used XK 120 at a similar price was not such a big deal.

I was wrong, very wrong.

I did try to tell you… :slightly_smiling_face:

When the Jaguar XJ220 came out, it was the fastest production car in the world.

This is the TWR modified one:

The new Jaguar Type 00 concept is launched:

The rear wheel arches pay homage to the E-type.

Not a bad looking car.

They could really explode heads and re-market it as ‘E-type now stands for Electric’.

Indeed, not bad looking. Only issue is that the car design requires a parking place like this one.
