The Basel-Mulhouse airport bomb threat may have been linked to the French railway signalling sabotage - people unable to travel by train may have decided to fly instead.
A shocking start to the games.
Putin is suspected.

The TGV line between Lyon and Paris is not affected. This includes Geneva and Lausanne.
Edited to add, this line was targeted but whatever it was failed.
âAnother attempted attack, on another TGV junction to the south-east of Paris at Vergigny, was foiled by SNCF workers who just happened to be carrying out maintenance on site in the early hours of Friday.â
Not sure why the title was changed. I specifically put my post inthe Sports section as a discussion about the Olympic Games which start today, as there wasnât a thread already.
Itâs not solely about the bomb threats - if it was, I would have put it in the International Affairs section and not the Sports section.
Thereâs too much meddling with titles on this forum without people engaging their brain first.
Itâs back how it was when I created the thread.
First doping case already before competition started. Going great.
Of course - did I read somewhere that the old Soviet sleeper network spread across Western Europe, is only in hibernation following the end of The Cold War, waiting to be activated.
Because the initial post was only about the bomb threat and nothing else to do with the olympics.
yet I think the two subjects should be kept apart. After all - to some people, used to be most - the olympic games are about sport.
Not to mention that - although most likely - there is no proof yet the attack is based on the olympics.
Probably because they hadnât started when I created the post and the only thing of interest was the fact that people were having trouble getting to the games.
Wetter than a wet thing out there tonight. Boats was a good choice of theme.
Letâs hope everything will go on without any other incidents. As a child I always waited for the Olympic games to begin as it was a major event one shouldnât miss. So it shaped a lot of kids in those generations and stimulated them to be more active, to practice or at least to try different sports. We all wanted to be like some sportsman/sportswoman afterwards⌠I am not so sure it still has the same impact as it used to (my kids donât really care too much), but for me itâs still a very important event.
Did they finally cancel the Muhammad parodied by a drag queen performance part of the opening show?
My first Olympics on TV were the Tokyo games in â64 although I recall the â68 Mexico games much more clearly. It was as you describe, all about sports, sportsmanship, and the amateur athletes.
Regrettably it is no longer like that. Junk sports, such as Breakdancing, politics barring, for example, Russia and Belarus, Boycotts, and then the Sponsors. A sizeable portion of IOCs staff are devoted to sponsorship.
The IOC is supposed to be not for profit, but it should be not for obscene executive bonuses.
So, sadly, I donât watch the games like I used to.
South Korean team announced as the North Korean one - didnât go down well.
Apparently the Olympic flag was flown upside down. Funny as I thought that only the wives of Supreme Court justices could do that.
They did have this show âLast Supperâ, I didnât know they planned another performance. But I doubt they would have risked such a thing, even the French can have some senseâŚ
WTF is going on here? âArmedâ foreign cops patrolling the streets of Paris?
I understand the whole Olympic spirit schtick, there are 1,800 of them from 43 countries. However if something goes wrong and one draws their weapon, it will be a legal nightmare.
sloppiness = the new normal.
Selenskyj being introduced as Putin, South Korea as North Korea ⌠skill shortage everywhere; American presidents, commentators âŚ
Switzerland is long used to that. Being confused with Sweden is just pure luck.
Thank goodness Swaziland changed their name.
