Op shops or Flea Markets?

Hello,

My girlfriend is obsessed with op shopping and going to flea markets and I think that is one thing she is really going to miss when not being in Australia. Are there these types of things in Switzerland?

Thanks!

This may help to reassure her.

here and here

most of the ones in zurich close for winter in november (till may) but then we have second hand shops or brockenhaus here is a link

I am an op-shop-a-holic and am having no trouble finding plenty of places - the turnover is very high and the prices are similar to Sydney - plenty of bargains to be had!

I adore wooden toys (and have kids so I can justify buying them) and we are getting stuff here in Zurich that we hardly ever get in Aust - plenty more nice wooden toys and items.

So, in answer to your question, no problem. They are easy to find and easy to browse...the only limit is that we don't have car so I'm limited to what I can pile in the stroller!...yesterday I brought home a large stool and a small table on my stroller...

Whenever I see this Buerkliplatz fleamarket I get the shivers. I have the feeling that, you know, grandpa fell over so lets get rid of his stuff at the fleamarket....

I'm a big fan of flea markets and second hand shops myself.

I don't think this is about getting rid of Grandpa's junk. Many of the traders are in it because they enjoy being in it. Sometimes you can pick up real bargains but you have to know a thing or two about antiques etc to tell a real bargain from a pretend one.

I also recommend the "Brockis", these are second hand shops sometimes but not always run by or for charity. I started visiting these as a student and furnished my appartment on very low budget with some very nice pieces of furniture. Some were just stop gap solutions and they went back to the Brocki as soon as I had the money to buy something more decent. But some I intend to keep, such as for example a beautiful carved oak art-deco writing desk which I got dirt cheap and looks really neat now that I've got around to cleaning it up.

I'm also into collecting old picture postcards and many flea markets are good places to pick up bargains on those.

Just trying to work out when the flea market in Zurich and/or produce markets in luzern get started? My understanding is they are closed in mid winter yes?

Zürich is May to October.

depends what you like to buy...

Not antiques...vintage clothes mostly...and eclectic home accessories (as oposed to traditional antiques).

Hey Neddles, I find Brockiland to be pretty good - but they have a limited range of men's clothing, especially in my size (you should be okay, though). Lots of electricals and odd household items too... you can catch a bus (34, iirc) to get to it...

I don't know the flea markets, will have to let my wife get back to you on those. Oh, and watch out for odd vinyl at flea markets and the brockies, I've seen a few interesting titles (although none in good condition so far), but it's well worth poking around in all the stalls...

"I'm a big fan of flea markets and second hand shops myself." Amogles

Being relocated to Suisse and not on a enormous budget, some people from our company will be definitely interested in the second hand market - especially as far as the household articles are for sale.

I tried - but I could not find any 'gumtree' type websites in Switzerland. ANY IDEAS/WEBSITES/ SUGGESTIONS WARMLY WELCOME!!! THANKS!

Also - can anyone suggest that type of venues/events in the Fribourg area?

It seems to me that nobody sells any second hand furniture in the Suisse - is that true?

Thank you in advance to all!

Ricardo.ch (but watch out, sales are not guaranteed)

Ebay.ch

There is a for sale/wanted and free stuff section here on the english forum which has pretty high turnover...

No, it is not true at all about second hand furniture - the second-hand market here is *alive and kicking* - there are plenty of places to get stuff...and decent prices too...

There is also more than one chain of cheaper style furniture (Ikea, Fly and Pfister come to mind, also TopTip is another one...

I heard complaints about shopping here, but I haven't really had too much trouble - we are in Zurich so that does make a difference, and part of the problem is having enough time to get around and work out where the shops can be found!

If you are looking for second-hand use the German word 'Brockenhaus' or 'Brocki' and you'll find plenty of places...also "Brockenstube' and 'Fundgrube'...

thanks Swisspea! I will definitely try!

Good night!

I can't find a good place in Vaud to buy second hand stuff, specially furniture. I was talking to a friend the other day and we both thought that we must open a second hand shop in Vaud, possibly Lausanne or Vevey where there are loads of foreigners who are in the same positions as we are.

Unfortunately, eBay.ch is quite small and not very popular Everytime I see something I like and I think the item is in Switzerland, I find out they are actually in Germany or France. Don't the swiss like second hand stuff?

Coming from Australia I am really going to struggle with this... I live in Sydney and leave next week. Op shopping is my favourite thing in the world I have been scouring Swiss ebay and there is nothing! We need to unearth something haha...........

anything similar in the Lausanne area that anyone knows of? Accidentally stumbled across the market in Place de la Ripone on saturday, but alas it was midday so most vendors were gone or packing up.

Have also been to Morges market on saturday morning.

Any other ideas?

p.s. maybe this is an aussie thing I used to a do a trawl of all the local st. vinnies once a year with my little sister, mainly for clothes. If that is what you are wanting then there are quite a few 2nd hand clothes shops, pretty cheap, where all the merchandise has been washed and ironed! There is one in Lausanne on Place de la Palud, opposite Yendi which is good (only women's clothes) and which can also give you a list off all similar shops near Lausanne.

Try Ricardo.ch

I've been told you can find more on there.

Not a million miles away from you there are two. One is in an old breeze block building between Fluelen and Altdorf (On the left just after Aldi) It has everything there, some real bargains if you know what you are looking for.

Then there is another in Altdorf just off Lehnplatz and diagonally opposite co-op. This one is very good for clothes last time we were in there was an incredible collection of antique lacewear.
