Ordinary Naturalisation in Switzerland

There are several ceremonies throughout the year in Vaud. I think Geneva has 1-2 every month so they should be able to bump her to another easy…

They’re held once a month so she shouldn’t have to wait too long.

Oh, thanks. I thought it was once per year, because the date is exactly like last year’s when my older got naturalised.
Then we will postpone.

Have you got the letter? I never got an email confirmation and not sure if this is normal. I would assume that I’ll not receive any update by email in my case. If it weren’t for the letter, I was not sure that I submitted the application at all…

The email was autogenerated confirmation that application was submitted. Also I got the letter that says process takes 2 years.

Once the application is approved by SEM, and it goes back to the canton for the final approval, a letter is sent that needs to be signed and ensure that no big changes happened in your life since the moment you applied for naturalization.

For example, if in the meantime you got married or you became parent.

But what if you changed employer? The moment you apply for naturalization, a document signed by the employer, which mentions the salary, is required. So I am curious if changing the employer is an issue.

Could someone who recently received this letter in the Canton of Zurich (and ideally City of Zurich) share here what exactly are those changes that should be reported?

I am interested in the exact wording of this letter if someone can share this information.

@Silvano the exact wording of the letter you refer to in the city of Zurich is: „you are responsible for informing us of any changes to your address, changes to your civil status (e.g. marriage, divorce or birth) or criminal proceedings during the procedure“. There is nothing stated concerning the employment. There are some more info about the duration of the process from that point onwards (6 months).

First of all, there is no “salary requirement” in the letter from the employer- I provided one without any financials, just the job description and some credentials. Second, change of employment is not what the letter from the canton is asking for. They ask if there are changes in your family structure (divorces, marriages, kids, etc) and/or if you have been in the meantime involved in any criminal proceedings in Switzerland or abroad…

In my case it took exactly one month from the moment I got this letter (which I returned signed on the same day) and until I got the coveted Golden Letter.

Good luck with your naturalization! The things should run fast from now on…

In Vaud they ask this before they send to the SEM… as I have just received the letter from the canton, which right after I received « commune citizenship »

Sorry I hadn’t been on for a while. I took my B2 test towards the end of 2022 (about a year before i submitted my application) and they were fine with that. As for my current status, all together I’m about 8 months into the process. For the first 4-5 months, my application sat with the Canton and City of Zurich informed me that it would take another 3-4 months before sending an invite for test. Provided that all goes to plan, I hopefully will get the invite in the next 30-45 days.

Here is my updated timeline after receiving the invitation to the ceremony.

I live in a commune close to Lausanne (VD). My timeline is as follows:

  • 11/2022 sent the application to the canton
  • 01/2023 acknowledgement from the canton, bills, forwarded to the commune
  • 02/2023 commune requested a motivation letter, CV, and other documents, invitation for the knowledge test, bill
  • 06/2023 knowledge test
  • 11/2023 interview with the police, very quick and friendly, they just confirmed that my information in the CV, etc. is correct
  • 02/2024 received the Bourgeoisie from my commune
  • 03/2024 confirmation from the canton and information about next steps, it said that it will take up to 8 more months
  • 05/2024 SEM bill
  • 07/2024 invitation to the ceremony
  • 08/2024 ceremony will take place in Lausanne

So the whole process took 20 months for me.

Congratulations. Don’t forget to take your permit with you to the ceremony. They want it back.

Curious to know, when did the Etat Civil section come in to your timeline? I recieved the bourgeoisie but now going through the Etat Civil update section in canton vaud.

Congrats again after the long wait!

I have not received anything else after the SEM bill except for this invitation. The letter says, among other things:
“Lors de la cérémonie, votre décision de naturalisation vous sera remise et vous permettra d’effectuer les demarches pour commander vos documents d’identité.”
I have not received any “Golden letter” as you call it. But I have not checked my mailbox for the last two weeks. Only the invitation and instructions for the ceremony.

Ah ok interesting.

I’m in the same canton and after the bourgeois

The service de population sent me this letter

domicile, etc.).”

Waiting to hear back now

Could you both please add a translation so others may benefit as well?

“However, we inform you that during the processing of your principal’s naturalization application, we opened a registration procedure with the Civil Status Directorate of Canton of Vaud.

This procedure is a mandatory step for any applicant in the process of naturalization in order to determine their civil identity. In view of the above, we inform you that we will pursue the naturalization request of your principal, as soon as the recording of his data is completed.

Also, we ask you to immediately notify us of any changes that occur - in Switzerland or abroad - in your situation (marriage, separation, divorce, birth, home, etc.).”

That wasn´t meant that you should do that

Just that generally a translation into english would be a good thing.

Sure, I will do that next time. Nevertheless, this should apply to German and Italian as well.
