Ordinary Naturalisation in Switzerland

I think there might actually be a mechanism in place for some countries, but more pull that push. Austria for example, is not especially generous with granting permission t citizens to obtain other citizenships. I am sure I read that when one renews their Austrian documentation, and they live in CH, the Austrians check to see is Swiss citizenship has been acquired, although I my be mistaken.

I would bet sizable money on there not existing any push mechanism of Switzerland directly informing any other country of a person getting naturalised as a Swiss citizen.

Any other country is of course free to impose any reporting requirements on its citizens on obtaining other nationalities. I would guess it’s mostly limited to having those citizens personally certify that they have not become citizens of other countries, with the usual risks attached to lying to the authorities of any country (though in this instance their former citizenship might be at stake). I sincerely doubt there’s a country that would routinely ask their citizens provide proof of non-citizenship in another country in form of an official confirmation issued by that country, that just seems overkill.

Could someone who knows the rules well please advise that after receipt of SEM confirmation, if I change gemeinde within the same kanton whilst the application is back at the Buergergemeinde, it will not affect my process i.e. not put it on hold or worse ask me to restart? Many thanks.

you can change gemeinde within the same canton after you receive the gemeinde citizenship. But you can ask the gemeinde.

Regarding ordinary naturalization in the Canton of Zurich:

Therefore, yes you can move anywhere in Switzerland (not only in your canton) once your municipality has approved. But as already suggested by megapixel, better to ask your municipality, especially if you are not in the Canton of Zurich.

@megapixel Have you contacted SEM to ask if they have any update about the progress of your application?

There are a few examples of people, like in the case of @Nads77, who didn’t receive a notfication when SEM approved, and the online status changed directly from “PrĂŒfung Bund” to “Abschluss”. @UrLhaw had the same experience.

I am thinking to contact SEM, but I think it’s a bit too early in my case, perhaps I will contact them if I don’t hear from them within 4 months. How long have you waited so far since the status changed to PrĂŒfund Bund?

I did at 3 months and they told me it is in Bearbeitung. Now I am at exactly 4 months since I paid the Bund fee.

My status is still PrĂŒfung Kanton.

With all due respect to everyone, I feel like this is turning into a Zurich naturalization forum which is legitimate but maybe better to have it in a new thread ?

My status changed to “SchlussprĂŒfung“.

So the updated timeline is for Stadt ZĂŒrich is

  • 7.23 applied
  • 11.23 online status change: “VorprĂŒfĂŒng"
  • 2.24 online status change: „PrĂŒfung Gemeinde“
  • 5.24 knowledge test at the Gemeinde
  • 6.24 became Gemeinde citizen
  • 7.24 online status change: “Prufung Kanton”
  • 10.24 became Kanton citizen and paid the Gemeinde and Kanton bills
  • 11.24 paid the federal bill. No status change so far, still Prufung Kanton.
  • 3.25 status change to SchlussprĂŒfung. So, I never had a status Prufung Bund as others.

So, it seems that I am about two weeks behind @swisstobe .

Does anyone have an indication how long it needs now?

Thanks.

Great news! Congrats @megapixel !!! Is that 4.5 months from the day the approval from the Canton was issued, i.e., the date written on the letter with the bills for the city and the canton?

Of course, nobody has any clue how long the next step will take, but hopefully you will have a fast-track approval since you have already waited much more than most of the people.

@swisstobe Did your case also take 4.5 months for receiving SEM approval?

Thank you! I know
I have started being impatient. :stuck_out_tongue:

It took almost 5 months (1w more and it would be 5) since the approval letter from the Kanton.

Just for some comparison, I paid SEM bill August 21st 2024, my status was PrĂŒfung Bund until it changed finally on 12th Feb to SchlussprĂŒfung. I have had no further news. I contacted SEM at end of Jan and they told me to be patient and that they had a backlog. The Kanton also replied to an enquiry in Jan to say that they had not received the Bund Bewilligung yet and that once that was received, it would still take 3 months! So much patience required :frowning: Everyday, I check the status and every day, I look forward to the post but I know it could still be another 2 months wait. It’s crazy how much they torture us and to a point we torture ourselves by being on here hahahah! Stay strong!!

For facilitated naturalization in the City of Lucerne (Stadt Luzern) had to do a small written test at the Police station right next to the Stadthaus. It was a very chill, I only had 12 questions with multiple choices. The police officer mentioned that, I needed like 10 correct answers from the 12, and I was able to do all correctly, so 100% accurate. After I completed, the police officer said, yes lets quickly check them on how well you did. The questions were all from the handbook. Although the Gemeinde never sent me the handbook, they did mention a link to it in the interview letter, which I downloaded in PDF. The handbook had 100 questions to be memorized from 5 different themes (20 questions per theme).

Also I postponed my interview to a month later as my wife was visiting her family during the proposed interview date, so we could both attend it. It was better that we both attended it later, because they asked us to sign some papers, and her signature also helped indicating that she was present during the interview.

Lastly, the police officer stated that he has done his report, the examination was successful, he has captured all our signatures into the report and evidences and he will pass it on back to the Gemiende and then it should go back to SEM. He mentioned it could take 2-3 months to get the next response. As I understand for facilitated naturalization, the SEM handles everything (I mailed my application to SEM directly via post). So far it has been 2+ months, haven’t heard anything back from them yet.

Once I receive the next communication, will provide more updates with dates and timelines on how it is going post the interview.

Thanks for the information. Are you in the city of Zurich? When did you submit the naturalization application? I hope you will receive the final approval soon!

Thank you! Hope so too

I am city of Uster, Canton of Zurich. I submitted my application end of July 2023.
