What do I do to prevent being totally screwed? Tell the driving office I didn't know and be honest? I don't want to di the course!!!!
I converted my American driving license to a Swiss license in 2008. today I went to rent a moving van and they told me my license expired last year! I had no idea a license card was only valid for a year (and a half).
I just checked my swiss licence and I couldn't see an expiry date.
Does yours have one on it?
I've had mine for well over 2 years and it is certainly still valid - possibly because I am an EU citizen and you (OP) are not?

I converted my US drivers license in 2004 and got back my US license with a sticker which said (in English) "not valid in Switzerland" and a Swiss license with no expiration date.
It wouldn't surprise me if the system has changed though. Renewal is an easy way for the Verkersamt to create a new income stream.
It's the first time I hear that a Swiss driver license has an expiration date...

Yes it really did expire!! If u look at your Swiss license u probably see under "4b", a bunch of stars. Well mine has a date in 2009! Wtf!!!
I had a full license that id had in the states for more than 2 years, and was driving for ages before that in Canada where I grew up. This is so frustrating!!!!
I just looked at mine which I converted in 2008 from a British driving licence, and under 4b expiry it just has stars.
It may very well be one rule for EU and another for the non-EU.
I converted my Texas license to a Swiss one about a year and 1/2 ago -- under 4b I have nothing but stars - maybe it has something to do with how long you had your previous license.
I got my Swiss license, converted from my Brazilian license, which was converted from my USA license.....no expiry date on my Swiss license
Im non EU and mine has a bunch of stars too. Only got it a few months ago.
Mine also does not expire.

Sounds like they gave you a temporary one. Tell them they gave you the wrong one. Good luck!
Good news. IT turned out that they'd taken the date that my WA license was last revised as the day i was first ever able to drive. They let me fax them in proof that I had a license more than 2 years prior to my license conversion, and now they are renewing my license. Nice of them consdiering it is a year later!

I'm American.. I change my drivers license to a Swiss one shortly after I moved here 10 years ago... just checked my license and I can't see any expiry date.
Yeah. As i mentioned earlier, it's all to do with the date they take as when you first had a valid license out of switzerland. In my case, they didn't have the right date, and they didn't tell me it mattered.
