Please help? :) [Need proof of Swiss driving license]

Hey EFers,

I’m English, lived in Switzerland for 7 odd years - back home in the UK for good now.

Passed driving test in the UK - changed license to a swiss one - now trying to apply for my UK one again - only problem is, for renewal, they need my old swiss driving license (which fell apart so I shredded it like an idiot).

DVLA want proof from the swiss authorities that I had a swiss driving license whilst I lived there.

Who do I contact about this? (sorry if this is a really obvious question - my swiss ex handled literally all of this stuff. I lived in LU if that helps?

Ideally want to do this ASAP - so I’m hoping they might email me a document of proof of the swiss license I held or something?

Thank you to anybody who can point me in the right direction.

Sam

You should contact these people, they are the ones who should be able to you a proof of registration, and they can tell you what kind of proof of ID (or whatever) they want from you.

As for shredding your old one without filing it broken or missing that might now become a complication which if so you have to solve. (And tbh, telling them you shredded it yourself, might perhaps not be the best approach to this.)

For LU:

But I'm not sure they will replace your CH license if you no longer reside here, and haven't a permit or citizenship.

Why not just tell the DVLA your UK lic is lost and you want it replacing?

Expired perhaps? (She has been here for 7 years, and they expire after 10 years)

They do not expire.

Ever.

Tom

Have you got a copy of your old UK licence ? The DVLA should have a record of you swapping it out. Or the number on your Swiss one?

The licence (as in your legal right to drive) no, the picture cards yes. Every ten years. There is no paper licence any more. Just the plastic cards.

Than why do they have a renewal date on them?

Mine doesn't.

Tom

Do you have an UK drivers license?

There is for those who never got a plastic one.

And it NEVER expires!

Tom

Ahhhhhh ok. It was confusing......who was discussing CH and who was discussing UK.

OP is talking about her SWISS license.

Tom

It expires when you become 70, or when you move address,

So to say they never expire is just wrong.

I am less than 70 (and may never make it), and havent changed address in 28 years.

So, practically speaking, NEVER!

And where did you come up with this "expires at 70" nonsense? Even the plastic ones don't.

Tom

The Swiss send your old licence back to DVLA when you exchange it - so DVLA should have proof of swap.

If you have moved aboard you can request a proof of your Swiss driving privileges from the StVA/SAN where you lived last.

Request a

German: "Bestätigung über die in der Schweiz registrierten Fahrberechtigungen." based on Art. 24h Abs. 2 VZV

French: "Attestation des autorisations de conduire enregistrées en Suisse" based on Art. 24h Al. 2 OAC

Italian: "Attestato delle autorizzazioni a condurre registrate in Svizzera" based on Art. 24h cpv 2 OAC

Doesn't expire, you just need to re-apply ( paperwork exercise) and declare any medical conditions etc. It's a self-cert deal.

Already thought you talked about the wrong thing.

I replied to this:

Which you could have known if you read the quote in my posting.

Above 70 one can no longer drive on a paper license, there is still the right to have a new license (when fitting the criteria) but the paper one is no longer valid.
