Shade/Film for HUGE Skylight?!

I am honestly not sure what type of answer you are looking for(?).

What exactly do you expect your landlord to do? Install shades? That's your responsibility...

If it`s a new building, maybe the architect has a solution? He/she designed it that way for .......... some reason, and maybe has a solution that could be simple?

Just a thought.

I think the rest of the building's apartments are older, and the roof apartment where I reside was built/renovated later, about 10-12 years ago. I guess I have to call the verwaltung to see? Will they tell me this info?

And this needs to be posted at the top of every thread on this forum! Thank you

You would likely achieve your aim more readily if you were to approach the landlord in a slightly less manipulative or confrontational manner than either of your apparent "options" above present.

But if you want to sit down with her, demand that she understand that the proper way to do things is as they are done "back in the states", and that she immediately rectify the situation at her own cost, and that if she doesn't then you will modify the apartment to your own wishes without her prior consent, then by all means, go ahead.

Please, let us know how that works out for you.

I like it how the OP really combines the best parts of her two cultures... the American "can do" attitude with Swiss logic and order.

I don't think that's unreasonable. The OP is looking to fit some sort of shade, not brick up the window.

As long as the apartment is handed back undamaged and in the same state as it was prior to the lease*, then I don't see a requirement for permission.

It seems to me that the OP's main issue was access to the skylight, not ways to make major modifications.

And if she gets a bit arsey with people taking the piss? Meh, you're all big boys and girls and she's sat in a plasma beam; she's allowed to be irritable.

*Allowing for the fact that a future tenant might want to take over the solution if it's elegant enough.

Yet she completely trashed the idea of a ladder... which would really come in handy if you got to take that shade back down when you hand back the apartment.

So: How about an indoor jet-pack to install the shade?

Hiya, if you actually read the original post, you'll see why I'm not interested in acquiring a ladder. Really read the details, and also read that someone suggested scaffolding . This would completely solve my problem, but I have not found it available for just a day. I'm also afraid of whether it fits in the lift, or in the front door as there's a tight entry way.

[Painfully slow, calm, parental tone] Can you help with finding that, little buddy, or are you only here to produce more verbal excrement? Please leave this thread alone if you have no helpful suggestions.

You need to work on the tone, it isn't having the slightest affect on me.

You have apparently mastered the use of the groan button: my advice would to learn some German and try google. I am conversant with both, it took me seconds to find what you are looking for.

It will cost some money, I'm guessing you don't want to spend any money either.

You might even re read the thread, there might just be an answer hiding in one of the above responses.

/me withdraws supportive tone.

There's being a bit arsey and there's being downright rude to somebody posting the only really logical solution.

If you want tailored advice, pay for an architect.

If you ask for free advice on an internet forum, have the grace take the rough with the smooth. Otherwise GTFO, as you would say.

Nah, I don't think I will. Seems like the only people who have shitty things to say here anyway are from the UK, which already says plenty (sorry about that, by the way). In other news, I'm deleting this thread, as a forum for expats turned out to be just as unhelpful as Swiss people in general. Have fun trolling the next thread!

Yeah nah, you are gonna have to ask for Mirfields help on that one.....

Mirfeld,

No need to use rude language. We ought to at least leave the OP one sphere of superiority.

e Yeah, good luck with that.

I read the thread and can only say that you seem to have more light than manners...

I, for one, won't miss you.

You might be right. It would seem to be a valid explanation for the fact that I have now edited my post to remove the useful answer that I supplied.

It might also just be that I find you annoying.

Good for you.

Oh don`t let the shit-heads get to you. There are some really nice helpful folk here.... .actually.

I learned the hard way, just like you are learning When I first joined here about a decade ago, I just could not understand the narky attitude to my dumb-ass questions - attempted to give as good as I got, got me nowhere (some, in my opinion were as thick as a brick) - it took me a year to get the energy, and courage, to come back!

But you get used to them. Some you even get to like for their regular nastiness, because sometimes they can also be quite helpful and kind.

Stay calm.

Now..... what was the question again? Oh yes, skylight problem. Did you see it when you first viewed the apartment? Did you ask about the beam of light-source irritation?

And rude. Don't forget rude. Who invites you to coffee and then doesn't offer to pay?

Bloody colonists.

I read the original post and the only thing you said is that a ladder would not be long enough. Which is frankly bullshit.

I have no problem finding tons of scaffolding companies online. But you really positively want them to move that through your lift, build it up and tear it down for one film on a freaking skylight?

You do know that a professional will charge at least around 150 CHF an hour. Putting up scaffolding takes two people. VERY conservatively 2.5 hours to put it up, 2.5 to put it down and maybe 30 mins to apply your film. 5.5 times two guys is 11 time 150 = 1650 CHF. Willing to pay that much? A handyman with a proper ladder will come cheaper. If any of the ones using this forum is actually willing to take on your business after this thread. I wouldn't. You sound like a lot of trouble.

You honestly cannot tell me where or what to post on here. That's not how the internet works. You seem to be a genuinely unpleasant person, so I do not feel like spending that one minute it takes to google "scaffolding zurich" in German and post the link here. You simply don't deserve help with the bitchy and entitled attitude you show. Good luck and enjoy the sunshine today!
