Shooting in Switzerland

Hello, I am an EU citizen working in Switzerland. I would like to know to what place should I go to get a license to shoot or to buy rifles in Switzerland.

Could any of you also tell me if there is in Switzerland any rifle shooting range longer than 500 meters? Preferably above 1000.

Thank you very much

This place seems to be a one-stop-shop for all things shooting related in Switzerland:

You’re not specific about the location but perhaps this would be a good starting point.

Don‘t you need a C permit before you can buy a gun?

And even then some countries are excluded.

Where is your location, more precisely than “Switzerland”? There’s an English speaking group (ES5) that goes shooting in SSG, Spreitenbach on a monthly basis. Sometimes down to Brunig indoor as well.

For long distance stuff, there are a couple of events per year, they appear to be quite exclusive and I think a few of the guys in ES5 have looked into it.

As to buying, it depends on your permit status and your country of origin as to the process. I don’t know any Spaniards on B permits who have firearms at the moment, if you’re on a C it’s not an issue.

No, on a B you can have permission from your home country, or show that you have possessed a firearm in your home country such as having had a licence. Some countries are more difficult than others.

As far as I know it’s possible with the B permit, since I already had guns and license in my home country. I only need to know what is the appropriate state institution where I should go to get a specific license for Switzerland.

Regarding the other question actually I don’t need to join a group or something like that. I only need to know if there is a shooting range big enough where I could go and pay hourly or maybe annually to be able to shoot. I am right on in Winterthur but I am willing to go to any place in Switzerland if there is a place longer than 500 meters. Also to shoot in the mountains, if it is allowed in this country. Any suggestions?

Then follow the instructions on this site, starting with the question on your criminal record:
https://www.zh.ch/de/sicherheit-just…on/waffen.html

Then you bring your documents and the application for the WES to the local police station and your get your permit to buy, not a licence.

I don’t know of any place over 300m. I am also unaware of the rules for shooting on public land without being a hunter.

I assume you mean target shooting? Small calibre ranges are usually up to 50m, large calibre is 300m (ISSF?)

Fullbore target shooting (Commonwealth/NRA) isn't accomodated here unfortunately (I was a school champion at this discipline) and even then they max out at 800m..

In the ES5 chat ( https://www.es5.ch/?page_id=86 ) this was discussed a couple of times. Apparently 300 meters is easy and >300 meter is very very hard. If you want to discuss more, feel free to join the chat

Not in Switzerland. Where in EU is over 500 and 1000m available?

Well, up to 2,500m here: https://www.vtg.admin.ch/de/die-schw…plwichlen.html . Some clubs have access to it: https://mittelkaliber.ch/vereinsinformationen/
I’m glad it is well away from me.

That's a long way to walk to get the targets!

Why on earth groan for just asking a question? Doh!

At the Anzac rifle range in Sydney where I used to shoot, the targets were "manned" ie. the target was placed in a counter-weight frame in a bunker which, after a shot , it was lowered, a marker was placed in the hole, then raised again. At the next shot, that hole would be patched and the process repeated.

Everyone in the club took turns to mark the targets.

300m-600m was okay, but at 700-800m the 7.62 bullets lost enough velocity to ricochet!

I believe 300m ISSF is electronically marked.

The groan was probably for the first sentence in your post rather than the question.

Plus it’s Tom, enough said.

In Parga, in the north of Spain you can shoot in to 1000m.

And yes, I’m talking about target shooting with 308w or 300wm.

That’s because your bullets reached the electronic target being subsonic. With the right bullet and reload you can be supersonic at 900-1000 m even with a 308w.

So is not possible in Switzerland to shoot in the mountains like hunters do?

I understand that, but we were only had access to factory-produced FMJ rounds. Sure they were slow, but they were very accurate.

Switzerland is a special country due to its size and above-average environmental protection. Things that are heavily restricted or forbidden here include:

*camping

*off-roading

*motor sport

*metal detecting

*stream fishing

So yeah, shooting in the wild is only possible with the appropriate licencing. And from what I understand, a lot of these are passed down in families.

I talked to a hunter recently, he said most shots are taken at 50-80m. This endures good shot placement. Not to mind that for humane reasons they go and check the animal to ensure it's been killed as soon as possible, and not a 1km walk away.

Hunters also have licencing requirements as opposed to people wish to possess firearms.

And this is also limited by how forests are managed. The areas without trees in the forest where hunters put their little huts are about this size. Not possible to shoot a deer from farther away because the deer is behind the trees.
