When I was in Italy my best year was 20 days (the closest resort was 2 hours far though). I always try to find the best condition, especially for powder and back country, and like you, most probably I prefer to decide where to go just a couple days before without any restriction.
Have you thought about Lenzerheide. Its not to far from Zurich by car or public transport.
Theres a bunch of different pass options. If you havent heard we are joing up with Arosa this winter which will create a huge ski area. well worth the price.
My son will be skiing at Flumserberg with a school club and I just want to be sure I understand the lift tickets so I can send the correct amount of money with him when he goes the first time.
The prices are listed 0-12 and 12-18. So which one does a 12 year old fall into - child or youth?
There are multi-day tickets and then there are day cards. What is the difference? Is one consecutive days and the other isn't?
He has a GA card so I'm not interested in the Snow/Rail pass thing because I don't think it does him any good - unless I am wrong someone please correct me!

You are wrong.. He will still get a discount on the ski pass which as far as I can tell is 10 or 20% off depending on the resort. Also watch out for the monthly offers where some resorts have 30% or even 50% (AROSA this month) off.
You cannot use the ticket machine though, you must go to the counter or purchase online and print.
Compare the prices on the link above with the Flumserg tariff. I think for Flumserberg it might be a bit less than 10% discount for the lift pass...
For Snow n rail tickets. You can book online (ignore what it says about only 1 day passes being available). Or buy at the station counter. Not at the resort . At the resort you then exchange the SBB snow n rail voucher for the ski pass - they may ask for the GA card to be shown.
any opinions of the Swiss Knife Valley Ski Pass, last season was my first year skiing so hoping to do a bit this coming season. Price looks not so bad 690 I think.
I noticed that but must contact them for an up to date price. Did Ski Sattel last year, not sure what the smaller Mythen places are like or if worth forking out for them. Any opinion yourself
I was looking at getting a pass to laax/davos but at 1300 it's a little steep. I live in zurich and am willing to go anywhere around an hour and a half drive, does anyone have any other suggestions? Anywhere in particular that has good discounts for buying your seasons passes in advance?
Thanks! If we wanted to travel around to more resorts is there any way to get discounts on day passes besides snow n rail? We would be driving so unfortunately i cant benefit from that

You may want to work out exactly how often you intend to ski during the season first.
For a season pass to save you money you have to use is sat & sun every single weekend of the season, if the season is crap (like last season) then you're just throwing money away. We live at a ski resort and its not worth us buying a season pass!!
I think in my first year in Switzerland I skied 100 days, it helped that the Tignes glacier was open 365 days a year at the time, however Laax always used to open in October & close in May, Engleburg went on a lot longer with an end of season 6 week pass for 150 CHF . Japanese tourists were charged more for 1 journey.
A weeks holiday gives 9 ski days, I know plenty of people living in London who have season passes, the fly out each weekend.
