Skimmed Milk

Apologise on 2 counts first for being incredibly dense and second if this has been asked before.

My german(french and Italian) is nonexistant and I'd like to buy some skimmed milk. I've checked the fat content on alot of cartons of milk(that much I could work out) and the lowest seems to be about 2.7% which is semi skimmed I guess. Do they not sell skimmed milke here? I they do what should I lok for?

Hi there.

The only skim milk you can buy in Switzerland is UHT sterilized. Therefore you'll find it on a shelf instead of in a refrigerated display, and you can keep it in your cupboard until you open it. Normal (i.e. with fat) UHT milk can taste a bit sketchy, but I find UHT skim milk tastes the same as the skim milk I used to drink back in the mother country...

The term in German is "Magermilch". At the Coop, it's sold as Weight Watchers milk in 1.5 litre bottles. The Migros "Slimline" milk comes in green 1 litre boxes.

Cheers,

HeatherM

The only place i have been allowed skimed milk with my coffee is Starbucks, so be warned

Thanks. Guess I'll try the UHT which I've shyed away from due to the dodgy taste. Maybe it's the fat that makes it taste nasty?

I have tried all of the Migros and COOP's UHT milk and they are fine, very similar to fresh milk in other countries I have lived in. However, the fresh milk in Switzerland is really nice, so it is still a trade off. But I have not found fresh milk yet without lactose, hence the UHT preference.

Both Migros and COOP skimmed milk are ok, I think I preferred one but cannot remember which.

Now what I want is a lactose free milk that is biologically produced as well

I use Migros UHT mile which is good. 2.8% fat. I buy everything with less than 4% fat so the 2.8% is fine by me. The body needs little bit of fat for proper functioning.

Coop skimmed tastes great, it is in a white milk bottle with a slightly greenish label and marked at 0% fat milk or 0.1% fat. Much better than normal milk (can't stand the taste of fat milk)

Either I'm used to it now, or the UHT here tastes different from the UK UHT stuff.

We too are skimmed milk drinkers.

As for the body needing fat, that is true, but there's plenty of other sources for that... gimme skimmed milk any day

We drink the Migros UHT "Slimline" 0% fat milk in the green carton. I think it tastes better than the skim milk in Australia. Full cream milk makes me gag.

Mind, Swiss friends and relatives, look at us like we have two heads when they see it. Some call it "white water" or are concerned if we are on a special diet :-)

Does anyone know if we can get A2 milk here? Or do you know which cows are most common in Switzerland, as Guernseys, Jerseys, and Brown Swiss produce A2 rich milk, but other European cows produce A1 due to an old gene mutation.

(Explanation: some scientists think A1 milk, which is the dominant one in Europe contains A1 casein proteins which act like opiods and are inflammatory, and play a role in autism, diabetes and heart disease, while A2 casein might not have this effect).

Thanks

Never had a problem with the UHT taste....and yeah, some fat in your milk is good. 2.7% was my choice. If you're not following it up by eating a tub of ice cream, you should be cool.

Hello, to the same topic.... Are there a lot of specail low fat products in shops or is it new to Switzerland? I am very used to Tescos ( UK) so I wouls probably miss the low fat and healthy living food variety.

There are a fair amount of low fat products available, anything in particular you would be looking for?

I do buy only low fat diary products, although i love chocolate and sweets. So would be nice to find healthier options of those.

Thank you

You can certainly buy low fat dairy items such as cheese, yogurt, desserts etc. in the general super markets.

oh thats good. Thank you very much.

have you tried sheep's milk. You can buy it from Jelmoli

No i havent. Is it any good?

i saw your link and its very high in fat and calories. It should taste very nice for me to drink it

I think it is quite good. The price will keep you from drinking too much essentially cancelling out the 'high fat & calories'
