Does anyone have any good tip for inhalation products available here in the pharmacies?
I am getting over laryngitis, I am humidifying our place enough throughout the nights but even though my vocal chords are doing better, I was recommended to try steam inhalation.
I am not looking for some woodoo magic, really, since I have just been fed back at home with some potent traditional tinctures from my medical family which have definitely worked wonders on the flu virus, but I can't do it any more.
So, do you inhale? What do you put in the hot liquid? How long do you inhale steam for, and how many times?
I have gotten myself Gelo ReVoice, btw, produced locally, it seems to be ok, but I think steam will work better than pills. Any ideas?
I've had laryngitis many times. I can't imagine steam inhalation would help at all. Hot drinks and try not to talk.
Yes, you inhale through your mouth - it might burn a little, so take in slow breaths, but long and deep like when doing yoga. Cover your head and pot with a cloth to contain in the steam. Gargling with boiled water cooled to body temp plus salt will also help. For your nose (if you have problems) a Neti bath with the same kind of salty water will help as well.
Another way is to run a hot, steamy bath - I usually add a couple of drops of lavender and eucalyptus essential oil and relax and breath in Not as torturing as the first approach. No getting around the Neti thing - it really sucks, I mean, it blows.
And lots of tea.
A mixing bowl with some Vicks and boiling water (be very careful making sure that you can't accidentally tip it over!), lean over with a towel over your head and breathe deeply.
I would ask a pharmacist to make sure that whatever you might be adding to your inhalation water is good for your larynx. Can't vouch for Vicks being good for that (used it for my sinuses) - better to play it safe and ask a pharmacist.
Also seconding the tea advice - add honey. I'm not too sure about lemon and ginger (both used for colds) being good for larynx problems, so again, to be on the safe side, pop into a pharmacy or call them if you'd rather not go out. Pharmacies do home deliveries if necessary

Steam inhalation is something which is commonly used by singers.
To be honest, it is worthwhile you investing in something like this (they ship to CH). As it just covers your nose and mouth, it leaves you free to read/watch tv/browse the internet/keep an eye on what the kids are up to - far better than covering your head with a tea towel

If you are very decongested, you could use something with eucalyptus oil in it but otherwise if it is to guard against dehydration of the vocal cords and sinuses (the sinuses have the role of humidifying the air we breathe before it passes over the vocal cords) then no product, just steam, is required.
You can also take hot steamy showers but these would need to be loooong (20 mins plus) and that could bankrupt you here in CH.

If you have an Aldi nearby, have a look there.
They had an inhalation machine for about 30 chufs plus a box of 30 individual capsules for 10 chufs, on their offers list from last Thurs. (26/2).
Unfortunately it's hard to find links to any previous offers, as only current ones come up - however, I have found one from the Austrian sister to Aldi (Hofer) for information purposes, but in DE.

Alternately, you can buy a simple plastic inhaler from a pharmacy, which consists of a base bowl (for inhalation brew) and a top piece (goes on base) which is funnel shaped with a mouth/nose shaped opening at the top for inhalation.
Similar to this:
I use any essential oil that contains eucalyptus, or otherwise Tiger Balm, in a bowl of bowling water. Have tissues at the ready!
This eases the congestion that goes with the cold that is responsable for your laryngitis.
Thank you, good people, I will try it. Got some "Nasobol" from my friend, got Olbas from another one, will sit over a glass bowl of hot water and inhale. I do wonder if hot steam won't irritate my throat more, since hot tea nor really cold stuff was not recommended, it it produces even more blood circulation in already exposed areas. Will see. Teaching, talking, inhaling chalk and dust and having rooms heated does not help, I think I am going to buy even more plants to keep our home more humid.
Have you tried lozenges?
For added humidity, a free solution would be wet towels over the heaters
Also, perhaps sleeping with a cut open onion in the room (beware the stink ) might help...
Teaching and the above is absolutely the worst- I remember being almost sick as I coughed so much and chalk woud irritate it even worse. You poor thing.
Inhalations are the best- no need for fancy gadgets- as said Olbas oil, Vicks, Nasobol, etc- in a large bowl of hot water and a towel over your head will work fine.
Now there is herbal treatment avaialble here, not cheap I'm afraid- but that works wonders for colds and sore throats, in a hot drink (for us, Rooibosch tea)- you can buy it in ana pharmacy in a small bottle and it is called Carmol. A friend who is a herbalist introduced us to it- and we both 'swear by it' now. Take care and get better soon. x

I buy Rooibosch in tea bags at Coop- and break-up the tea-bags in a small bowl, and just use a pinch- on sachet does me about 10 cups
Just by chance Migros tetley (they have rooibos vanilla/orange/pure, whatever you prefer) is on sale at the moment. As it is bagged, you might want to go for the loose tea which I don't think is sold in Migros but perhaps the large Coops have it. Nice idea indeed - inhale that lovely smell first and then slurp away
How's your throat, MC? Hope you're well!
I was going to say that they don't use chalk in schools any more but then I remembered that they still do here.
Son is board monitor this week.
Later in my career I had an interactive white board in the UK- no chalk indeed!
But I remember the chalk days! And the OHTs and the gorgeous smell of the alcohol multicoloured banda machine. Them were the days!
How are you indeed MC- hope you are getting better.
They still use those too. Had to get hold of some of those for his exposé a couple of weeks ago.
Wearing black jeans when you're the board monitor is not a good idea.
Hope you're felling better MC.
At the end of the day- it's only just 'gadgetry' - kids get used to any technology used and get just as 'blasé' or bored, if teaching and teacher are not up to scratch. Good teaching is so much more important (as said, as long as you don't wear black jeans ).
But back to subject- how are you MC?
Hehe, board duty - one teacher cleaning the board with no water and leaving white swirls on the board for next class, the second doing a perfect job and the third delegating cleaning duty to the students - cleaning with a very wet sponge and one rinse during cleaning, followed by a wipe across with a squeegee got the best results
just saw this thread- but i'm a big steam lover- if you have a gym you go to with a hamman that helps. but steaming at home i do a lot (the life of a teacher and using your voice ) i add eucalyptus and the vicks idea someone had sounds good, i'm going to try that.
one thing (and i know you didn't want voodoo stuff, but it saves my throat, sorry) is boiling ginger garlic and lemon. i drink a ton of it and so far, knock on wood no issues this year. good luck and hope you're feeling better!
Ginger, lemon and honey used to be my stand-bye when I taught.
With some subjects, you can get students to read, quiet study, do exercises or 'projects', etc- but with mod langs and younger students- you justhave to 'perform' all the time- sore throats and coughs are a nightmare.
Nothing voodoo about that, these things are full of oils which have health benefits. But adding something like honey definitely improves the taste
