Stupid things kids do - catch fish and eat them raw

My other half took the kids to the mountains to hike around a lake.

I had a phone call with them and learned that the kids managed to catch some fish in the lake and ate them raw before they could be stopped.

Now my relaxing evening is replaced with researching potential parasites and bacteria…

Assuming there’s no ill effects, that sounds like one of those “Remember that time when you…” cracking family stories for the future.

Pretty sure they’ll be fine and any sickness would become apparent within 3-4 hours.

Did they just munch right into them? :grimacing:

Hopefully, no harm will come to them. You’re raising survivors, be proud!

Yeah, they managed to catch maybe 5 small fish. Charles, the eldest (6yo) ate 3 of them ‘because he was hungry’ and the youngest (4yo) ate one just to copy her brother. And yes, they were silly enough to put live uncooked fish in their mouth and eat them. Charles told me he had to bite it ‘to kill it first’.

Assuming they don’t get a bacterial infection, the other thing we’ll need to check out is whether they get fish tapeworm.

Had they cooked the first first, I might agree.

Right now, they are trying to get Darwin awards.

Look on the bright side, you’ve not raised fussy eaters. My 12yo is the bane of my life, I wish I could program Tripadvisor to have an “Adam” restaurant filter.

Charles is a very fussy eater, but fish and pasta are the 2 things he likes to eat.

Mine decided eating slugs in the garden was a good idea when he was about three, he survived just fine but I was traumatised by it.

So were the slugs

tiny fish from a Swiss mountain lake. Swiss sushi in child oriented portions.

Okay there is one thing: Your kids are either very nimble or the fish were half dead already. You could check their stool for worms later. But otherwise I wouldn’t worry too much.

My eldest, many oodles of yonks ago went for worm spaghetti, slurped them things down before she was caught.

I’m sorry but WTF??? :scream:

I presume it was wriggling in his mouth and he had to chew on it to kill it.

Are you sure they are still your kids and havnt been body snatched by aliens?

Did they have a permit to fish? I’d be concerned that they may be embarking on a criminal career.

What else?

It’s been around for yonks…

I read that pet fish are often treated with anti-bacteria and anti-parasite before being sold, so the risk is hopefully reduced.

I just picked up the kids from the train station.

On the way back, I gave them a packet of seaweed each.

Then as I was driving, I there was a rattle as the youngest managed to rip open the silica gel packet and scatter it everywhere.

I told her that it was not food and shouldn’t be eaten. At which point, Charles pipes up and tells me he’s already eaten his packet of silica gel… :man_facepalming:
