Surface Pro review

Absolutely, no freaking good.

Thank you.

It looked promising on paper, but Windows 8 is terrible for starters.

Well I haven't had opportunity to use one, but by all accounts it's nothing like it's cracked up to be. MS needed to bring something to market that would have had to have stood way above android and iOS to even have a chance of competing. By all accounts they fumbled and dropped the ball miserably.

Had they been first to market 3 years ago the it would have stood a chance, but offering up something that has basically been described, by the tech blogosphere, as lacklustre in comparison to the other developed offerings on the market means that surface is to all intents and purpose doing the opposite to its moniker, namely sinking.

It's a shame really because the tablet world needed a 3rd viable contender in the marketplace

My review was based on the fact that Surface could not locate my wireless network. Found my neigbours' no problem. All other devices in the house can find my wifi.

A quick search reveals that this a common glitch for the Surface with no apparent fix. It went back into the box.

MS had a chance to blow Apple away, instead they blew it.

Looked terrible on paper to me especially the price. Just couldn't see why you wouldn't be done with it and buy a proper laptop.

I have a UPC router with abg connectivity (or whatever that's called)

Do you guys know how to check what frequency the signal is (2.4 hz or 5 hz ) and how to switch between these a/b/g things?

I have not got a clue. How do you tinker with your modem in general? Where do you change its settings???

Thanks!

update: after lots of blind poking around on the modem set up page, I did something that made the Surface find my network.

still... if it does not work out of the box, it is a piece of sh*t

Send it my way. I'll buy your dog a replacement bone.

Very kind of you, sir! But he is quite fond of the current bone. I will gladly send it your way, though, in exchange for chf 1,500.

You're kidding aren't you? I read on the Internet that it's absolutely, no freaking good.

don't believe everything you read on the internet. lots of crazy people out there

Its little brother, the Surface RT is an absolute peach. As for the Pro, I'd much rather have a Macbook Air.

What do you like about the RT over another tablet? (serious question)

because a tablet is a better form factor for many pieces of work. In the business area it may do very well as it already has the application base which is critical.

Early reviews of Microsoft software are always universally overtly negative. time will tell, but Microsoft shares are doing very well recently while Apples are tumbling.

Much better to buy an ultrabook with nice slim aluminium chassis that one of these horrendously overpriced and underperforming tablets. 1200chf-1500chf gets you a damn good one.

How long does it take for an apple notebook to boot up? I like tablets because they are always on. I am not going to sit on the can and wait for a laptop to boot up. I just want to know what Lindsay Lohan is up to.

a friend bought one recently.

he is actually a total Apple freak but prefers the Surface Pro to a Macbook Air (because it is a tablet) and the iPad (because it runs the full-version operating system, compared to the mobile operating system on the iPad).

This answer you've given here really sums up the argument very well: each type of consumer has their own requirements. a Tablet that wont connect to the wireless for a home user will give a huge negative reaction, however a nice shiny apple that wont do anything other than the internet at your workplace is useless. A fully functioning ultrabook is brilliant (and bootup times are extremely quick to answer the other point) if you are a tech-savvy heavy application user, but over the top if you just need the internet - i.e. your more of a tablet person.

I am not sure which will win out - Apple have good tablets, google are now selling more tablets than apple, netbooks and standard laptops are dead in a couple of years now so its an interesting time. The Surface Pro, if you remember, is meant to blur the line between an ultrabook and a tablet, it runs an i5 chip so it has plenty of grunt and it has the full OS onboard so it can run any Windows application. Although it has its standard microsoft failings, i.e. it isnt as rock solid as an apple tablet (though in fairness apple's offering is simpler technically) I think it will be a suprising fight between the ultrabook, the power-tablet and the others, along with a right slogout between apple, google and Microsoft.

Somewhat changing the question a bit, Richdog, what laptop would you buy for say 1200 chf ? I am looking for such a laptop currently and the last one I bought was 7 years ago. I want to stick to windows, need 13 inch screen, full HD and plenty of grunt with ideally staying as light as possible. any recommendations ?

I have a MacBook Air. I don't do full shutdowns and cold boots (since Mac OS is, really, just a UNIX wrapper) and I am normally working within a second or two of opening the lid.

Hi,

sounds like your experience with Macbook Air is similar to mine with Windows, I just go into sleep mode and so it means it is very quick to start working again We are talking quite a short period of time. With Windows 8 and an SSD it is even faster.

Apart from a Windows 8 tablet I have not used any other tablets which even come close to replacing a laptop for most of the tasks for which I use a computer. An ipad is ok if all you are doing is reading but as soon as you need to type or get any work done you really need to change to a laptop.

Windows 8 is a lot better than people who have never used it are saying. I have a non touch laptop with it installed and a Windows 8 tablet and I am delighted with both of them.

It seems Windows 8.1 (Blue) will come this year and it will allow you to boot directly to the Desktop mode and also the start button will reappear ...though it never went away...it was just replaced with the Windows key.

If I had an Mac Book Air I think the first thing I would do is install Windows 8 on it.

Have fun
