Swiss German Songs

Hi everyone - I'm trying to upgrade my dialect skills and have been listening to Schnitzelbängg and songs like Tubel Trophy . I like to play them on repeat and try to sing along, to get my words up to speed. Does anyone have any text-heavy songs that they can recommend? Songs in Basler dialect would be especially good. Thanks!

For good Swiss newcomers check out Best of Demotapeclinic. A lot of songs are in English, but some are Swiss German! http://www.m4music.ch/de/demotape-clinic/cd

Don't overlook the great Mani Matter !

He's almost like a national hero. Great textwriter. His songs have a little place in the heart of near everyone in german speaking CH...

Super cool! Danke. U would not by chance know Switzerduutch school for English speakers in basel so I could understand the lyrics.

Regarding Mani matter: I see that lo and leduc give reference to him in their video. Barn connection....

lo&leduc warum düet dir so fröhlech

here's a site with all or most of Mani Matter's song texts

Here's a site with description and an English translation of one of his most famous songs,

I han e Zündhölzli azündt

Start with that one. genious, IMHO.

there's some other links on there you'll find useful, too.

Have you checked out this site yet http://www.podclub.ch/sendungen/typisch-helene-ch-d?

One of the most famous Swiss Songs is 'Dr Schacher Seppli' by Ruedi Rymann

... and here another classic in Berndeutsch

Cheers pilatus1 et al!

A good Swiss german app I need....and I think Iam on my way.

Finally it happened! The "Berner" moved out of the cave into a " BARN "

Can't wait to tell this to "Gotfried" und "Walter"my berner friend

My wife has a book by Mani Matter, Sudelhefte Rumpelbuch - a collection of his writings. I just opened it up and found this:

̈Wenn man sich überlegt, dass die Mona Lisa mit lauter einzelnen Pinselstrichen gemalt wurde...."

There is meaning in those words.....however is large brush-strokes the pathway to a Mona Lisa...or was refinement of large brush-strokes to way to Mona Lisa. What was manni referring to?

Dr Eskimo, Mani Matter:

Kennet ihr das Gschichtli scho

Do you know the little story yet

Vo däm armen Eskimo

of the poor Eskimo

Wo in Grönland einisch so

where in Greenland once so

Trurig isch um ds Läbe cho

sadly lost his life

Är het dank em Radio

He had thanks for the radio

Fröid ar Musig übercho

excited that music came over it

Und het tänkt das chan i o

And had thought "I can do that, too"

So isch är i ds'unglück cho

and so his bad luck came.

Nämlech är het sech für zwo

Namely, he had for two

Fläsche Läbertran es no

bottles of fish oil

Guet erhaltes Cembalo

A good condition harpsichord

Gchouft und hets i d'Höli gno

bought, and took it into the cave.

Doch won är fortissimo

But when he strongly

Gspilt het uf sym Cembalo

had played on his harpsichord

Isch en Ysbär ynecho

Came a polar bear inside

Het ne zwüsche d'Chralle gno

and took him between his claws.

Kunscht isch geng es Risiko

Art is always a risk,

So isch är um ds Läbe cho

that's how he lost his life.

Und ihr gseht d'Moral dervo

and you see the moral then-

Choufet nie es Cembalo

never buy a harpsichord

Süsch geits öich grad äbeso

or the same will happen to you

Wi däm armen Eskimo

like the poor eskimo

Wo in Grönland einisch so

where once in Greenland so

Truurig isch um ds Läbe cho

sadly lost his life.

His words are like single brushstrokes in a painting. The sentence does not need to be complete. How did DaVinci decide when enough was enough? When he had gotten his point across...

This is the beauty of Mani Matter's style. His songs are like funny little kid's songs but each one has a philosophical implication as well. Instead of explaining it all, he just sets the listener up to come to a conclusion on their own. The genius lies in the simplicity (or complexity, depending how you look at it) of it all.

Not sure what Matter war referring to, haven't read the book. Notwithstanding that, think of his lyrics... His songs aren't really about what they are about, they are filled with very small details in the foreground, but there is usually a whole metaphorical background that doesn't get mentioned explicitly. Think of "Ir Ysebahn", or "William Tell", both are about the human condition (the latter particularily in a small Swiss Village), without directly mentioning either. Masterful.

Very true. We all grow up with Mani Matter's songs.

My personal favourites are:

... and the 'Eskimo' of course
