I think they do multiple crash tests. Front, side and rear, and usually into a wall-like structure in order to standardise it.
We’re straying a bit far from the EV subject so you can start a new Car Safety thread for a more in depth discussion.

Eh? No. The (European) tests involve being crashed into solid stationary barriers or having a solid ram smashed into them from the side. Other cars are not involved - specifically so. Some do criticise NCAP for not doing a partial head-on crash simulation, NCAP state this is not a major cause of car death, is better covered by the other tests and therrefore is not included.

Exactly! By crashing into a solid wall a force only encounters an equal opposing force.
So ideally one is better off in a larger heavier vehicle with an excellent safety rating. Such as this one
Speaking of EV‘s and safety, we know that lithium batteries can get spicy if punctured. So imagine being in a lithium fire after a serious crash. Has this been tested?
EVs score at the top now.
I suspect it’s the advanced safety gear and the lack of an ICE up front allows more room for crumple-zone structure.
According to google, only the integrity of the battery containment structure, and not any resultant fire.
Actually that motor block up front helps in a frontal collision to absorb the impact and double serve as a buffer zone.
Some recent testing was conducted last week in LA. If the heat doesn’t roast one the fumes will certainly destroy the lungs within minutes.

Some engines are designed to shear their mounts, drop down and do under the car rather than end up in the footwell crushing the occupants legs, and this does act as part of the crumple zone.
An EV still performs better as the crumple zone can be bigger and be designed specifically as a crumple zone. No one would design a crumple zone to look like a block of cast metal.
Wondering at what point the world will realise EV are far from environmentally friendly?
This article is upsetting as an Ocean lover
That is indeed sad. So much for boycotting palm oil!
Let’s face it, all our technology will at some point damage the environment and it is all on diminishing returns and things won’t get better than they are at the moment.
Compare city pollution now in Europe compared with what it was like a couple of hundred years ago.
So much cleaner - and that’s thanks to technology. Re-cycling of metals etc has reduced mining requirements - but they have still risen due to increased demand.
It’s attitudes which need to change.
The people on this forum who, when asked why they need a new car every couple of years or so who reply “Because I want one”, and “Other people can have my cast-offs”.
People who fly regularly for pleasure.
Most car journeys are under 3Km.
Governments who refuse to invest in decent rail infrastructure and when they do, they make it so expensive that it becomes much cheaper (but much worse for the environment) to fly.
City pollution might have improved, but that doesn’t make EVs better for the planet;
Pollution from mining
Pollution from shipping the batteries and battery materials
Pollution from cargo ships sinking due uncontrollable EV fires
Pollution from producing the electricity to run EVs
Pollution from battery disposal
No second hand EV market due to expense of battery replacement
Just because emissions aren’t coming out of the exhaust doesn’t mean they don’t exist
(FYI I had my last car for 10 years)
So did we. Slightly jealous of all these people on the forum that are apparently swapping their cars every two years. Takes me a good 18 months to finally figure out all the buttons.
I agree with you. I’m not the problem here.
But pollution-wise, all-round, EVs are cleaner and better for the environment than ICEs.
What is better than both if people used public transport, bicycles or walked more.
Someday humans will go back to riding horses and fighting with bows and arrows. But probably not in our lifetimes.
No, it has just shifted, our cities may be cleaner now than a couple of hundred yonks ago, but cities that were clean a couple of hundred years ago are now unliveable.
We live in a snow globe, shit in one corner and we all noticr.
I specifically wrote Europe as I am fully aware of what is happening in other cities around the world.
Buy a VW. They keep to their good intuitive button layout that is about the same for all of their models. So you can upgrade to any model and still use the same basic controls. However, I am still hoping and preying that I will not have to replace the 11 year old dependable anytime soon. I have little trust in the durability of today`s electronics and I simply know I will hate giving up perhaps my last manual shifter.
