The EV thread

The 3G network closure renders expensive car extras worthless.

Makes me wonder what other surprises are hidden under the hood
Sorry, only in German for Switzerland

Some cars like Teslas can be upgraded according to Google but BMWs not.

I got an email from BMW some weeks ago about 3G being powered off. I found today what’s about:

Hahahahaha, not 1 but 2 SIM cards in the car. 1 4G SIM would be too simple and too sensible

So, no more emergency call after airbags are deployed. But, the 2nd SIM still receives the road traffic updates.

Time to enjoy writing a letter about how disappointed I am. Not upset because such fails are not worth to be upset. Only disappointment at how BMW while having the capability to master the use of technology (data SIM works), they fail at delivering a useful product (no more emergency calls). I’ll go full Karen.

My husband’s Volvo is also affected.

No mention of this from the dealer, even though he brought it in for service about three months ago. Only found out about this here - so thanks for the info, Marton.

Is there a list somewhere of what year models are affected?

Unlikely since the upgrades would have been performed mid cycle so you’d need to study your spec sheet or run the VIN through a decoder.

However as a rough estimate, cars built from about 2015 onward typically have LTE/4G connectivity as standard and therefore unaffected.

All one needs is a relatively new iPhone or Google Pixel phone.

Otherwise the Life360 app

google search says 4G/LTE EOL is 2030 or beyound …

Problem is the telecom technology is progressing faster then the life expectancy of our cars and phones. I saw this already back in 2014. Figured the standard FM radio would be obsolete in a decade and so paid extra for the DAB. Well worth the extra frank.

4G is the network that will work until 2030. 3G is the network shut down on the last day of 2025

i’m looking into a used cars … this will be another consideration. :folded_hands:

smartphones these days make a lot of the built-in vehicle functionalities ‘obsolete’, unless buying a new/recent model vehicle … I could find use for my CD collection… lol

Dear Phil,

I know this isn’t the right place. However, I’m completely new here and have a question for you. I saw that you’re the admin. Unfortunately, I can’t figure out how to contact you. Could you possibly help me?

Best regards,

An interesting little snippit in the news.
It seems that Poland is going to ban private ownership of Chinese cars by members of the military or government employees or people working in essential infrastructure, also it will be forbidden to drive past or park near the infrastructure.
The ban could also extend to Tesla.
That should cause interesting debates in Brussels.

It wouldn’t be the first time.

Will they also be banned from travelling in them e.g. taxis or a mate’s car?
A workaround/compromise would be for the EV manufacturer to have their servers in the EU and monitored by government cyber security vendors.

I doubt the Chinese would go for that.

They did when it came to tiktok, the servers are now stateside for US users. ByteDance and the CCP actually went even further, they sold a majority stake to a US consortium that includes Oracle’ s Larry Ellison (ensuring that many pro-Palestine, anti-Israel content is silenced, shadow-banned or simply removed and the accounts banned).

So yes there is precedence for a pragmatic compromise.
