I looked at the video of BYD in this article. I have to say wow at the features, compared to western made vehicles. not sure i like the orange interior, but i assume it’s changeable

Update from Porsche EV plans (Porsche will Elektromodell Taycan 2030 einstellen):
- Taycan called openly a flop.
- Taycan to be discontinued by 2030 according to anonymous sources within Porsche
- The target 80% of Porsche car sales being EVs is mocked today
- Rumours of Porsche buying RUF to gain some reputation back. But, only after failing to buy Singer from California.

There are conflicting reports about the veracity of that rumor. Though 2030 gives it a good run and it wouldn’t be unusual to have this thing sunset.
Porsche is done for and they know it. All they can do is milk this cow while she’s still giving and then call it quits.
Wow, some Tesla model 3 on sale have been driven more than 200k km.
If I understand well, the report is not about ending the production of the current Taycan generation, and developing and releasing a 2nd one. It’s about ending the BEV 4-door sedan plan. In 2025 27k Panamera sold, 16k Taycan. The plan for 80% of sales to be BEV is not going to happen.
The Wirtschafts Woche article discusses how management got distracted by looking at what Tesla did instead of listening to their own customers. I don’t think it’s the end of Porsche, they will merge Panamera and Taycan into a single chassis with several powertrain options: BEV, hybrid, 100% ICE.
I finally had the chance to ride in a model 3 (taxi app). It’s a good car, good value for the money paid. There are several ones with 200k km. That’s interesting.
The drivetrain is allegedly specced for a million miles. It was conceived as a Robo-Taxi after all, with near 24h operation 7 days a week.
Porsche’s problem is that their main customer base is aging out of driving a car - and the next generation often has no desire to buy one from Porsche. EV or not.
It’s a simple fact of life that all products have their time - and when that time comes to an end, there is little you can do but ride it into the sunset. Which is more or less what they are trying to do here.
The world of cars is changing.
What started as simple lease-models is now more and more turning into pay-as-you-go schemes where people don’t have funds or the desire to own a car - and robo-taxi services will make it less and less necessary to do so. The car is being reduced to a simply utility.
You don’t need to own a generator like at the beginning of the electricity age, you can buy electricity by the kWh from the local electricity company.
Same with cars: it’s nice to own one, but if you don’t drive much and the price is right, it might not make sense to own one in the first place. Much less an expensive one.

Indeed…how many people left who learnt to drive on a manual? (I learnt to drive on a 60 series Land Cruiser Sahara…5 spd, vacuum assisted clutch and linear ratio steering… and a whopping great bull bar

Me and my wife are looking at cars and we’ll likely need one in 2-3y.
What we likely will be looking at is a small, usable car - I’m mainly looking at the BYD dolphin surf here. Compact, Chinese and cheap… Maybe I’m missing alternatives, but I suspect there’ll be a few used ones on the market in the next years. We don’t need any fancy assistents or whatever - I just want a car with decent range and ideally a battery that doesn’t deteriorate as fast (I read the dolphin surf has a newer battery tech, hence why I looked into it)
For the even longer term (maybe in 5-10y) I’ll also be looking at 7 seater EVs, the Peugeot 5008 looked nice, Kia EV9 or Hyundai Ionic 9 as well, but I’m not rich…
What are some good go to models among EV conaisseurs? The only relevant criterion is cost-performance imho - so cheap is good, but a bit more expensive for a lot more stuff is even better. Brands are not relevant to us.
I did and I still drive one, I much prefer them to automatics.
Our son also learned to drive in a manual although he did end up taking his test in an automatic as it was just at the time when they changed the rules. His little car is a manual too so he still drives manual.

Sounds like you need to make up your mind - small car or 7 seater. Or do you only plan to keep the small car for 2-3 years before moving up in size?

We will likely keep both cars, but I am looking at a 5 seater, small EV now, for me and my wife + the first future kids. If we get two cars then I definetly want a small one and a big one, but the 7 seater is a mid-long term project.
We have had this scenario during the last months where our old car a classic 7 seater Minivan decided to end his life after 280’000Km so we looked at EV alternatives and a 7-seater option is still not easy to find. We actually landed at a Tesla Model Y with 7-seats. It’s not as roomy as the old car was but we went already on a trip to Italy and France with 6 and 7 persons driving for 3h which was good. We checked KIA/Hyundai (to expensive) BYD Han (our second favorite at the same price as the Tesla) and Peugeot 5008 (which was hard to find 7 seater and only at the same price like the Tesla if used). So far it has been a good decison but ask me again in 5 years.

How expensive was the car and did you buy, finance or lease?
It set me back 53k CHF and I bought it directly as there was no good lease offer at the moment. Peugeot had a interesting 0.9% offer but alas.

The problem is: they don’t need to be good.
So, choose your vendor wisely.

The long wheel base Model Y L with six seats is expected to arrive soon-ish, too, in Europe.
It will probably be priced around the same as the current Performance option - maybe a bit cheaper.
I was quite interested in the BYD Dolphin Surf, as it seemed to check most of my boxes - cheap and compact being the most important criterion. I’m looking to replace a Daihatsu Sirion.
However the ‘less than useable’ cargo space in the Surf is probably a deal breaker. With my current car the rear passenger seats fold completely flat, essentially turning it into a two seater with the rest cargo - which is how I use the car 99% of the time. The Dophin Surf does not do that, the rear seats do not fold flat, pretty much losing it’s utility for me.
This is a problem with all the compact EVs I have seen so far.
To get what I need in an EV I’d likely have to go up quite a bit in size and price. At which point, I have to ask ‘What’s the point?’
So we will likely re-think the whole thing. We’ll likely first get a larger EV for my husband, to replace his Volvo, and I’ll keep driving cheap and cheerful ICE cars that fit my need for cargo space.
My 2P - if you don’t need cargo space, the Dolphin Surf seems like a nice little car, at a good price. On the test drive it felt fine - comfy, handled well.
Yes, I was waiting for this as well. Unfortunately, our family car did break down and we needed to move on at some point. If the Model Y L will be significantly better that might hurt a little bit but ok that’s life.
