I wonder if it’d be sensible to import from Germany?
Because - and maybe I’m just cheap, but the Dolphin still costs like 20K+ and a Peugeot 5000e with the 96kwh battery is like 55K… I really hope these prices drop drastically in the next years, but man this is just too expensive for me to dump in a car…
all these up front costs of vehicles in CH, their higher prices (i see almost identical vehicles listed on autoscout24.de for much less), I can only suggest figuring out TCO for the next 5 years and go with the numbers …
Vehicles in CH tend to be more expensive than in EU (depending on where you buy them from what country) … it’s a used vehicle .. what is your out-of-pocket risk appetite?
Unfortunately, on searching further, pictures show that neither of those cars’ rear seats fold the way I’d need - flush with the floor of the cargo space. Both create a step down to the floor of the boot, meaning you at best have two small cargo areas rather than one larger one.
(I have to fit two large (and heavy!) ‘Autobox’ style dog crates in the cargo space. What I need is one continuous surface.)
I stumbled on one compact EV that has the cargo space I need, a Leapmotor T03 Cargo.
However, rather than provide flush-foldable rear seats like my current car has, it seems they simply eliminated the rear seats altogether, making the car a two seater. Sure, that’s the way I usually drive, but I’d rather not give up the back seats, even if just for the few times a year I drive human passengers around.
Most small EVs won’t give you a flat floor as the space that the rears sears fold into is taken up by batteries.
I had a quick look and the Kia EV2 does have a completely flat floor with the rear seats down, space under the floor as well and a small storage compartment under the bonnet:
With these Chinese EVs I would mainly be concerned with dealer/service network, length of warranty and parts availability. I’ve heard horror stories of Jaecoos in the UK taking months to repair because parts need to be ordered and shipped from China.
Personally I still don’t see the value in a Chinese EV that is sold for half the price in China, because that margin of difference is mainly profit/taxes/tariffs (more an issue in the EU since CH doesn’t have extra tariffs on Chinese cars).
It all depends on the customer’s needs. The Daihatsu Sirion to be replaced is 3.6m long. The Tesla that fits dog crates is the Y, 4.75m long. Quite rational to move around extra 1.15m of car to do the same job.
Well, it’s expensive. We paid 20k for our Sköda Citigo less the trade-in. And I’d rather not buy from a US company, particularly one owned by that idiot.
