A plus point is that they've replaced that slightly raised area of seating to the right of the bar with a stage so there's a reasonable prospect of some live acts. I know that the Winterthur premises has some pretty good music on from time to time, so it's worth keeping an eye out.
Overall, the layout is pretty much the same as the old Dubliner except that they've taken the partitions down to waist/shoulder level, giving it a much more open and airy look. That also helps with seeing the TV screens - they've now got plasmas at both ends of the pub so should be half decent for sports. Also seems a bit brighter generally and the new floor is good.
As noted by Lob, the food service is pretty abysmal so far. Here's hoping it's just teething troubles.
Goodness me! What tales of debauchery, skullduggery and general mayhem do we have here? You're not trying to tell me that there are DRUGS in Zurich are you? who'd have believed it!.......but then it has been voted the best city in the world to live-in (!)......so I guess there has to be PLENTY of drugs around and PLENTY of people on them for it to achieve that..........any nation that can turn it's citizens and the world onto LSD, MDMA, the most varied and powerful assortment of anti-depressants known to science and provide a seemingly inexhaustible supply of un-cut Bolivian marching powder within it's own land-locked borders on the other side of the world to South America that also just happens to have an inordinate supply of salsa dance teachers and largely empty dance establishments all over the place has got to be up to it's neck, or nose, in it somewhere.....hasn't it? or am I just being naive?
.......and as for Paddy Reillys........I hope they can actually serve a pint quickly and take note of which customer came first to the bar for a drink......unlike the Dubliners previous 'modus operandi' which consisted of a 15 minute wait to be served, being q-jumped by someone with a bigger rolex and then scratching your balls for 30 minutes whilst you waited for your drink, during which time you could watch the man at the end of the bar reading his paper and.........constantly scratch and wipe.........the end of his...........nose!......and IF, as suggested above, he WAS consorting with 'ladies of the night' i now know that he was also constantly scratching and wiping something else beginning with N beneath his newspaper at the same time! Quite some feat, I'd say!! Let's hear it for that man! Zurich is even less colourful without you, obviously!!! Good luck wherever you are!
Hmmmmm, laundry man. Doesn't sound like you knew the Old Dubliner that well. The staff made the place, in the days I started going (2000). By 2004/2005 a mixture of what seemed paranoia and control freakery by the boss destroyed the place. Drugs notwithstanding. As some posts have mentioned , the new management don't seemed to have learned any lessons.
It's a pity - I quite like their pubs in Basel and Winterthur but my experiences with the renovated Dubliner have not been positive. Poor service and a limited selection of average but very overpriced food.
anyone been to Paddy Reilly Zurich since then? I've been back on a Saturday for food and it was *ok*.
Does it actually get going at all in there anymore? The reason I go to a-thinking about it was that Jerry used to put on a pretty good Halloween party - and this weekend, there are some parties on.
To hell with it, I'm too old...!
Looking at the website www.paddys.ch , it seems that the Locarno one is either closed, sold or....a secret
My husband goes quite often on a Friday night he says it's OK and does get busy. Paddy's sponser the hurling team so it would be rude of him not to drink there
On the 9th Nov, there is a very good live band on in Paddy Reilly's Zurich called Klonakilty, the singer is from County Wicklow in Ireland and the guitarist in English.
This may not be relevant to the thread but I just wanted to share this info with you all because they are well worth seeing, the food may not be up to much, but on this evening the music certainly will be!!
They also play in Basel on the 7th Dec and no I ́m not on commission!!
Actually no, I won ́t be going to either of these gigs as I am going to the gigs that are near to me in Badenweiler, Germany.
My point was, to tell you guys about them, so that anyone that is into live music can go see them and enjoy!! you can see more info on www.klonakilty.com
I have to concur with the last positive review. I last went to the Ex-Dubliner when it reopened for the footy World Cup, and it was awful. I'd only ever been back for a swifty since then (no food).
I've just been there for lunch today and was very happy with it. I had the Irish Breakfast (a full English fry up). Aside from the bread being a touch on the small side, I was very happy with it.
My mate had a burger, which whilst not being as good as those in The Lion, was quite satisfactory.
Are they doing 'Paddy Burgers' there yet? I had one in the Winterthur 'franchise' and it was great. But the food in the Zuerich one the last time I went there (admittedly about 5 months ago) was limited in choice and rubbish in quality, as well as being overpriced even by Zuerich standards.
Just a note to say that having watched Paddy Reillys since the demise of the Dubliner and the unpromising re-opening, things are much improved. Food is good, back to the standards of 2000 (when I first arrived). Service is also a lot better.
My credentials for this review? Well I was barred by Gerry for venturing customer feedback (although true to type he never told me that to my face) so at least I must have known how to hit the nail on the head back then!
I wasn't here last summer nor did I witness first hand the decline of the Dub (living in the UK), but I remember it in its heyday from when I lived here before.
As for Paddy Reilly's, I have to say I like the remodeling they did, even if it was fairly modest. Knocking out the walls/snugs?/dividers in the main area was a big improvement and makes it a much better place to watch sport(s).
The service is better than it was as the Dub, unless you go back maybe 6 years or so.
Another big plus is the non-smoking area in the front. Often the best place to find a free table!
The food is pretty good, too. The cottage pie might not be as good as before, but the burgers are improved. Decent club, too.
