They have been available for quite some time. I remember first seeing 'energy drinks' a good 17 years ago when visiting, and there were already a huge line (other than redbull) with every popculture (Michael Jackson History Energy Drink). At partied the kids would drink these in a mimic fashion to the older kids drinking alcohol. These 'kids' are now adults and probably very used to them now (perhaps addictive ) as they've grown up with them.
Compared to Canada (my only comparison), redbull/energy drinks only became legal to sell there 2005ish. Of course that had more to do with the ingredients which do vary, depending on the energy drink.
Quite correct. Red Bull entered the market in Switzerland in the mid 90s. Soon after, a similar product entered the market but failed to establish market dominance. For many yeas, it was the only "energy drink" available in Switzerland. Only recently, other established brands (Monster, Rockstar etc.) were able to slightly dent the seminal marketshare Red Bull holds. I complain a lot about Swiss retailers and the lack of forward thinking strategies they hold. However, one of the best investment they undertook, was to create private label energy drinks, seen as the prevalent choice of breakfast by the pre and post puberty teens.
Was speaking to my dentist during my last visit (an aussie-swiss dentist!) and he claims tooth erosion has now become the biggest cause of tooth loss, having overtaken plaque and gum disease. Reason..highly acidic energy and sports drinks.
I suffered mild erosion due to sports gels used on long-distance cycling rides.
I still can't figure out how some people are able to sort out the Swiss from the non-Swiss while they pass them on the street, in the grocery, at the train station, etc., allowing them to make such interesting observations.
Normally quite easily..........do they sound like donald duck and/or wear dark clothing / anything non colourful, and ignore your existence within their tunnel vision i.e. do they demonstrate an ability to not physically see you. I dont mean mistakenly as we can all sometimes do, I mean genuinely as it must be genuinely to do some of the things they do.
I had the same thing happen to me in another thread, about crazy Swiss drivers. Basically anyone not screaming their native national anthems, covered in the paint of their homeland, and speaking in foreign langauges, are Swiss. Also anyone not in McDonald's. All Red Bull drinkers are Swiss; it's so obvious.
And I think in the handbook we all got when entering this land of Austrian made energy drinks for the Swiss only.
I would replace "Swiss" with "people in Switzerland" and you've got your generalization...
I think this phenomenon is because energy drinks are incredibly cheap here, especially the store brands, and the generics are almost indistinguishable from Red Bull. I also find it inconsistent with the general healthful lifestyle here.
So re-reading my last comment in the post was a little harsh!!
So just to add to the OP... just quietly (don't tell anyone so I don't get cyber yelled at).. I have noticed the same thing, lots of people do seem to be drinking energy drinks, and there are HEAPS of them in the supermarket from what I've seen in a previous life...
Energy drinks have a good market worldwide, not just in Switzerland. And nothing is known that energy drinks are in higher requirement with smokers than with non-smokers. I in the 1960ies observed that old ladies eating Vermicelles had their coffee with Assugrin. But I never jumped to the conclusion that Vermicelles-consumers need some Assugrin to complement their Vermicelles and Coffee
Exactly the coffeïn is what they want. It is quite similar to what is in coffee, Coca Cola and tea (teeïn).
There is a wide variety of Energy Drinks, with Red Bull just one of them. Another one is "EnergyShot" produced in Brazil for Goiano Products in CH-5037 Reitnau, which is quite good. I a year ago at a demo-stand got offered one small mini-bottle, and when saying that it was "acceptable" but that I was not convinced , a nice young lady gave me a package with 30 small mini-bottles free-of-charge. And I from time to time consumed one. There still are some 10 of them around, but, yes, I will replace the stuff when it is finished.
The authorities a while ago acted against energy-drinks mixed with alcohol, which was not the best idea, as now, many youngsters mix the stuff themselves.
