Things to do in Sweden

Might sound like an odd request, but what sort of activities could be recommended for a family of 4 (with 14 and 12 yr old) in southern Sweden in August?

Mind seem like an odd destination for a summer holiday, but we have a week off and the 2nd weekend sees Fribourg-Gottéron playing Djurgarden in the Ice Hockey European Trophy. Thing is, what to do up till then? It's by no means certain, just an idea we had.

If you are going up slightly further to Stockholm, take the ( sometimes free ) ferry from Vikingline to Turku, Helsinki or Archipelago.

Link in Swedish

lose the kids and take in the sights....

How odd, thread moved from Travel....

Actually, fair enough, didn't realise Travel was Switzerland only now. Was it always?

We'll actually probably end up going closer to Stockholm, if at all.

The other idea was to fly to Copenhagen, spend a few days there, then get the train to Stockholm for the Hockey and to visit friends.

what about a Stockholm-Tallinn-St. Petersburg-Helsinki cruise?

Thanks for the link. We were thinking of a cruise too, but worried it could be pricey.

That website is truly awful though, I have to say. Maybe it's my old browser...

I depends what you call south Sweden. And how cultural/child-friendly you need it.

In Skåne, I must say that I liked Lund . Cathedral, historical and culture historical museums and botanical garden.

You could also take the ferry from Helsingborg to Helsingør and visit Hamlet's castle.

Malmø is not so bad and but for the same baltic beach feeling, I find Copenhagen southern outskirts far better. In summer, their use to be a sand castle competition every year in the 90ies... don't know it it's still there.

Ystad animal park seems to be a big thing, but no idea how good it is and on which criteria one would judge that.

Friends of the art, take ferry/bridge over to Louisiana museum of modern art (Giacometti's walking giant men there...)

Science centre museum Frederiksdal Open Air Museum ... just heard of it but I didn't listen. I just remember someone talking to me like it a lot. No other memories of that conversation.

If you want a cruise, take the ship from Copenhagen to Bornholm and rent some bikes there. You won't be alone. I might even be there too, just not this summer.

I would also think that the beaches of southern Skåne and Blekinge must be nice places for family holidays. Just a guess.

I recently went over and started at Gothenburg, went around the west coast to a youth hostel to the west of Uddevalla (on the water, great views, very relaxed, kids more than welcome, opportunity to hire kayaks and associated gear ... sadly, can't recall the name of the place! Will check and get back to you). From there we took a day trip to the fishing village of Lysekil, very beautiful, nice to wander around, and we had a fantastic lunch in a restaurant right on the docks ... on the way back to Gothenburg we stopped to check out the old fortress ruins at Kungälv, which has an interesting history, and is great to wander through (they also offer guides, we went without).

I know it's on the west coast, not the east, but depending on your plans you could either fly or take a train across from one coast to the other ...

Drop by at The Local for a beer or two ?

Near Slussen.

http://www.thelocal.se/discuss/index.php for some ideas as well.

If you are taking the cruise from Vikingline , the ferry terminal is a good 25 minute walk from Slussen Metro station ( cab is better for the familie ).

Have a wonderful break.

Things? .....

Geez, why everyone loves the ferry I'll never know as unless you love watching nordics guzzle cheap beer at 8am on the water, it gets pretty boring fairly quickly. Sure, the ABBA karaoke in the pub after about 11pm gets pretty hilarious but... And if you DO take the ferry, ride Silja and avoid the Vikingline like the plague as it's cheaper which means there are more drunk kids and, well, the detritus that comes with drunks in general. Better food on Silja as well.

Scandinavia is gorgeous in the Summertime when it isn't cold and rainy (unusual, but it can happen). I highly recommend Stockholm, particularly the old town. Since your kids are older, I won't recommend the Pippi Longstocking park or the MoominWorld park in Turku, Finland (just across the gulf). If you like old archeological bits, there's Visby on Gotland (Gotland is cool al by itself as a vacation destination).

What sorts of stuff does your family like to do?

If you've got a rainy day in Stockholm then the Vasa is well worth a look.

It's very impressive.

Entry and transport prices can be steep. You might want to consider the Stockholm Card.

If travelling from Copenhagen / Kastrup to Mälmo ( Skåne ), the Jo-Jo card might be in order.

If you're up in Stockholm, have at least one night on the Af Chapman just for the hell of it. It sounds like it's in better nick now, than it was nearly 25yrs. back when I stayed there.

I remember 2 pts being the same price as an eat-all-you-can smorgasbord; but car hire (from a local place) was comparatively cheap.

There's a MoominWorld park? I want to go to that! Possibly my favourite book (at age 6, iirc) was The Exploits of Moominpapa !! Awesome story and characters ... I still remember the 'waterline' painted on the ship, makes perfect sense in a certain way ... gonna have to organise my next holiday to Finland now, just for MoominWorld!

Thanks for the Silja tip, it seems pretty comparable pricewise to Viking actually.

What do my kids like to do? Listen to music and watch TV . However, the eldest went to Paris with Mrs. G and enjoyed just sightseeing, so that shouldn't be too much of a hardship. They're pretty excited about going on a short cruise and of course watching the hockey match.

I've worked out a draft itinerary as follows: Fly to Copenhagen and spend 2 nights there, sightseeing etc Train to Stockholm Round trip to Helsinki/Riga/Talinn (2 nights) Stay with friends just outside Stockholm (inc. Hockey match) for 3 nights Fly back to CH Myself and Mrs. G. have been to Stockholm before and loved it. I think the kids wouod enjoy it too and to visit 3 Scandinavian capitals in a week seemed to be a big attraction.

Please don't start sentences with 'And'. Baltic should start with a capital letter. I expect my posters to write decent English, does that apply to you Faltrad?

IF you find yourself in Gothenburg / Göteborg, a nice outing could be to Marstrand ( car less islet NW of Gothenburg, day ticket valid on bus and ferry ) especially to the Carlsten Castle. Got activities for kids as well but best thing to do is sailing and fishing

The Aeroseum is a not well known subterranean Cold War facility an hour from Gothenburg by bus ( day ticket valid ):

Lots of activities for kids. Every last weekend of August there is an air show.

Enjoy a can of surstroemming!

Tom

P.S. If you can't find any, I have three cans in the fridge!
