I have a Tageskarte that needs validating. The Tram stop in Zürich that I start at this morning has no validation machine! Gaah, what should I do??
Is there a machine on the tram you could use to validate it?
If not hop off at the next stop with a machine, validate it and hop on again.
I don’t know Zürich at all, so don’t know if the trams have machines or any of the stops. I’m getting on at Letzigrund if anyone knows the area. Not for a couple of hours, so time for advice ![]()
Are you sure? They are often integrated in the ticket machine.
Yes, they are but some places have only a ticket machine at one side of the road so it may be on the opposite bus stop.
The buses have validating machines inside.
If the trams don’t have them (I have no idea, because there are no trams in my village, so I already have a ticket by the time I reach Zurich), I assume that all their stops should be equipped with validating machine, no?
If it is not built into the large ticket machine (sometimes machine only on one side of the road):
then look for a small orange box like this:
That is iirc only in buses? For trams there should be a ticket machine at the tram stop.
No. I just checked and they don’t have to offer those machines anymore since Jan. 1st 2025!. They will not be replaced when they break down.
This is totally crazy! They know about the problems (children without handies, anybody without handy or credit card, anybody who refuses electronic solution) but it seems they don’t care/didn’t come up with a solution.
This is also one step closer to the transparent citizen. No more anonymous travel - except without ticket and not getting caught.
I have no advice for OP, I’ll cross my fingers they won’t get caught - if so they got a valid ticket which couldn’t be stamped. Interesting case.
Normally there is an instruction on the ticket what to do. I think you can write necessary information with a pen if the validating maschine is not available.
THANK YOU!! I found it at the side of the ticket machine. I had been looking for the orange style box. Lifesaver!!!
Thanks all!
Necessary information is date, time and stop you got on. Also tear off, carefully, the tab the machine normally chops off.
Personally I’d rather have all tickets on my phone. But I get cheaper Tageskarten through my husband’s job and they are only available in paper form ![]()
If it’s a multiple journey ticket with 6 fields you should write on the last field (the furthest from the end). So next times you can use your ticket normally untill you get to that last field.
I stopped using multiple journeys tickets completely since their validity was limited by 1 year. Before I kept them as emergency tickets if my guests or my kids want to go to Zurich or to take a local bus. I had several tickets for different zones and for different kinds travellers, with and without Halbtax. Some of my tickets were 5 or more years old. But with a validity of 1 year it doesn’t make sense anymore.
My solution is one that the SBB likely wouldn’t like.
I drive.
Exactly my though this morning: So nice my car returned from servicing happily purring.
I’ve not been on a train/tram in ages and after this thread I probably never will again.
What? With easyride and fairtiq public transport tickets are a no-brainer. Even in Zurich!
you talk in riddles to people like me.
Just pretend I do not have a smartphone. Then start again.
