I had no idea. I went to the office today and saw a huge banner I learned about the hockey world championships taking in Zürich Altstetten and the public transport stops nearby the BCF arena in Fribourg.
By the size of the fanzone being built now in Altstetten, expect above average numbers of happy supporters starting this Friday May 15. Two matches per day, one starting at 16h20 and the second one at 20h20.
I listened to the radio regularly while working. Anyway, I missed the news about the final for the football 2nd division in Switzerland. Last night there was a game between FC Aarau and Zürich Grasshopers here in Aarau. I drove to the train station to pick up my wife and…what a mess in traffic.
The 2nd game of the final is next Thursday in Letzigrund stadium in Zürich at 20h00. That game will define who goes up to the Super League next year and who stays in the 2nd division.
So, it may be a calm night, or fireworks in trains, or guys breaking up things on the streets. Not the nicest place to be around next Thursday night.
Another Accident involving a person (suicide) On Geneva -Lausanne main line. All trains leaving Geneva northbound are suspended. Some Leman express services also affected.
Delays and cancellations all afternoon and evening. They desperately need a parallel line out of Geneva to Lausanne, but nothing is being considered until 2038 at the earliest.
The A1 in Geneva will be closed for 3 whole days (June 15, 16 and 17) due to a meeting…in Evian, France? On the other shore of the lake?
A section of the A1 motorway linking Switzerland and France will be partially closed for 72 hours during the G7 summit in Evian, between June 15 and 17. This closure, affecting the Meyrin-Bardonnex section, is causing concern among Geneva’s business community.
According to information from RTS (Swiss Radio and Television), the A1 motorway will be partially closed on the Swiss-French route, between Meyrin and the Bardonnex border crossing, for the duration of the Evian G7 summit.
This section of motorway notably provides a direct link between Geneva Airport (Cointrin) and France, bypassing the city center and its often congested roads.
All of the smaller border crossings are closed too… and not just for three days but seven (12-18th June, although in practice they started blocking them tye afternoon of the 11th).
Massive queues expected at the few crossings remaining open, and the centre of Geneva looks like a war sone as shops and banks have put up huge wooden barricades.
Trying to avoid a repetition of 2003 apparently.
The G8 riots in Geneva (which occurred in June 2003 during protests against the G8 summit held in nearby Évian, France) cost the city 2 to 3 million Swiss francs (approximately $2–3 million USD at that time) in damage repair costs, with some estimates running to several million dollars total.
They obviously don’t want a repeat of that particularly for an event not involving Switzerland. Geneva’s Cointrin airport has been designated as the arrival/ departure airport for the diplomatic groups as it is only 40km from Evian. Lyon airport is 140km while the nearest French military base is over 160km away
What a stupid place to have a summit.
People say Geneva is boring. Maybe not. A car was set on fire a few mins ago during the protests. The French tourist will have an unforgettable memory of Switzerland.
Mysteries of our time: why leave one of the most hated objects on the planet on the street during a protest?
The protest is authorized until 22h30. This is the area to avoid…unless the plan is bringing a few beers to share and smash a few things.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a big overlap. There definitely is with the Schwarzer Block that always wrecks the May 1 (Tag der Arbeit) demo, at least 30-40 years ago it was basically a circle in Zürich.
Bit out of thread topic, but a video has come up. People reportedly saw a tag “eat the rich” made to the car before being set on fire. There’s also lefty extremists.
Hottest day of the year and they have overhead line problems at Lausanne. Were told trains were running from Renens so we took the Metro. Guess what, no trains running from Renens in either direction. Now sitting on regional train waiting for it to leave. Every 5 minutes it’s delayed another 5 minutes. Pissups in a brewery anyone?
