TV Repair

We have a 6 year old Samsung TV...pretty sure it's an LCD. It has a perfectly good picture, but it's having problems turning on. I think, from some research, it's a capacitor issue, but not sure.

It clicks on and off, like it's trying to start up, and then after a while it comes on. But it's taking a longer time now.

As it's out of warranty, we'd like to find someone to take a look at it. Not quite in the mood to buy a completely new TV yet if we can avoid it.

Any suggestions for repair around Winterthur-Zurich?

Thanks.

Be aware that a new TV will cost half the price of your old one & use half the electricity. I don't know what size you have but 40 inches & less are pretty cheap today. An hour of labour in a repair shop could well be 50% of the cost of a new TV.

Model? You want to get rid of it?

I am pretty sure repair by someone here will be much more than it's worth I'm afraid.

If its indeed the well known capacitor problem the fix is very simple. Problem, if you can not do it yourself (needs new capacitor, soldering iron, wick, solder, and a bit of knowledge) you will pay a heck of a lot of money.

Well the last time I did any soldering was 1977 in p-chem lab. I'll do a bit more research.

You must be kidding me!

The exact same thing happened to us this week. Samsung LED 40. Same year than you..

It's very common, apparently. In the US, there was a class action suit, but not here, of course. I'm trying to decide if I want to solder.

I don't think you have anything to loose TBH.

W bought our in CH. We sent it to someone to see if it can be repaired. Waiting to get an estimation and we will decide if it is worth to fix it or buy a new one.

It just the best timing ever. Stuck at home, post surgery and now rainy weekend with kids at home...

We were just out looking at TV's. A sony 42 inch led is 699. To fix this one is going to be at least (but likely more) than 300 chuffs. The price has dropped a lot in 6, nearly 7 years. So it's a new one for us. Screw the solder.

Thanks to everyone for their info.

Meanwhile, back in the USA, my sony trinitron 19 inch from 1990 is still humming along.

Looking at mediamarkt I just saw a http://shop.mediamarkt.ch/de/fernseh...6/idpnaf2c3nlx

An LG 42 inch for 443.95 plenty of bargains around, I would look in interdiscount as well.

Samsung 40 inch 449.10

Nope, i want a sony. (Actually husband wants Sony) Had enough Samsung and went and looked at a bunch of them this morning. Cheapest is not always best.

It's amazing the power of top brands & why it's always a better investment to purchase stock of the company selling the highest priced goods. Coke v Pepsi

Of course Sony don't even make the panel, they just package it like all the other manufactures. 3 or 4 factories make all the flat panels in consumer goods & the manufactures buy from more than 1 vendor. Sony even had a joint venture with Samsung for TV production.

Hubby is at mediamarkt now, looking at them. We will see Monday what they tell us about our Samsung.

Do they actually sell any non-smart TVs anymore?

I know that in the US, you can get a Seiki, but here, all you get is TVs loaded with features, spyware and security-holes I don't need..

Probably true. However, i had a Sony, my FIL and Bil had Sony - no problem. We liked the Samsung, but not this sh*t.

For anyone else in the market for a 40 inch screen Migros are selling one for 299

sure, but I still wouldn't want the Samsung logo on my next TV

I worry more about the images. Of course the current best range of monitors comes from Dolby, 10 times brighter than anything else, no need for a darkened room. I expect it will filter down to consumer land in 5 years.

very common issue on the samsung 40 inch tv's (and the many many re-badged own brand ones)

easy fix, just go on ebay and companies have put together kits to fix the power boards, only down side is you'll need to take the back off first to get your exact power board number, or just replace the whole board, again, plenty of refurbed boards on ebay.

afriad its not a case of if but when they fail inderdiscounts 'own' brand where rebadged samsungs, and it happened to ours. We only lost the HD picture though.
