Urgent - what's the best Thai for an evening meal in Zurich!!??

Hello can anyone help. Been looking at Tripadvisor and it people reccomend Al Hua on Brauerstrasse near Langstrasse...

Any better insider tips welcome!! :-)

Jack

my favorite is Blue Monkey in Niederdorf

I love A-Hua (sp), and to be honest am a bit surprised that it is in Tripadvisor.

It is well priced, and great food. Just off Helvetiaplatz.

I believe that a search on the forum will provide you with the same info

There is also Lily's on Langstrasse, but that is a lot pricier.

However, what is the occasion? A-Hua is very casual.

You will not go wrong!

Just realised how poor my English was on that post... apologies! (must read them before sending!)

Thanks for prompt replies everyone!

Natasha it's for a 2 year anniversary of meeting my fiance... and 1 year anniversary or getting engaged. So is Al Hua a no-no? We only have one job between us at the moment so can't splash out too much ;-)

What would we pay in Lilys if we fancied some wine too??

Fully agree: Great food.

Do you mean "best" only in terms of the food or are you looking for atmosphere as well?

Then it would be a bit on the "simple" side... perfect to get good food for a good price, not exactly perfect for business dinners or candlelight dinners I guess...

It depends on what sort of evening meal? What budget?

Ah hua is really good! But it's very noisy and you share tables with others. The cost is about CHF18-30 and it's really full of Thais and they're not afraid to make things spicy if you ask for "thai hot". It has more of a hawker atmosphere. You won't have any privacy.

There's another good place called Som Tam which is on Baeckerstrasse. Nice food and more of a proper restaurant which is about the same price.

There are also trendy thai cafes like Tiffins and Lily's (CHF 25-40) where again, you share long tables with others. There are small places like Roi Et which also do good thai but in very simple surroundings where you would get your own table. With Roi Et, the food is good, but don't be surprise if yours is the only table out of the 4 that they have, which is occupied.

Blue Monkey is certainly good but it's a more expensive and up-market compared to the above recommendations. It's got pretty good atmosphere inside, quiet, music, nice furniture. I guess sitting out is almost like sitting out anywhere (there is outdoor sitting on a good day). The food upstairs costs more than downstairs.

I noticed that I didn't give any addresses nor link to these places but they've all been mentioned in other posts. And if you do a search, chances are you'll see other similar conversations come up. The prices would be on the websites.

If I had to pick something between Blue Monkey and Ah Hua, I would go to Som Tam (first choice) or Roi Et.

Have fun!

I love Lilys as well, but it does not have the atmosphere for an aniversary either... actually non of the Thai places I have been to in Zurich has.

How about Libanese? "Le Cedre" at Badener Strasse would be good for your occasion from my personal taste...

Have been to Blue Monkey so know what you mean. I think Al Hua sounds ideal for an authentic Thai meal, and my fiance is Indian therefore likes things HOT!! :-)

Anyone else know Som Tam? will google it now...

Maybe I can make it more anniversary-like by going for a cocktail somewhere first.. so here goes... any recommendations for excellent pre-dinner cocktails???!!

JL

It just opened a few months ago

Sugar Lounge at the Sihlstrasse Tramstop:

- Just as stop or two from the restaurants in Kreis 4

- Good cocktails (my favourite: White choco cranberry caipirinha)

Not bad but expensive and not a big size meal.

Bang song thai nearby, is better.

I am just going to send an e-mail to some of my friends to get the name of

this very cute little thai place in Niederdorf, very traditional and great service.

Slightly more pricey, but a lot more conducive to romance.

Natasha - do you mean the one near the church? That's Ban Song Thai. Also good but pricey.

I had yummy cocktails here:

Restaurant Schmuklerski

Badenerstrasse 101

8004 Zürich/ZH

044 241 1541

It's next to Plaza cinema, corner of Langstrasse/Ankerstrasse and Badenerstrasse and just a short walk from Ah Hua

They also do a good new york cheesecake (not sure if it's the best in Zurich, but I really liked the atmosphere and good cocktails).

Thanks everyone, looks like SUgar Lounge followed by Som Tam or Al Hua... unless Natasha's friends come up with a better one in the old town?! :-)

Cheers everyone

That's the one Nanda,

It is a little pricier, but more suitable for a 2 year anniversary I think.

Cool... so my ten minutes of serious advice today are over

An hua is -fantastic-. Their papaya salad is beautiful. And though its not a 'romantic' restaurant, it is fun and lively.

I'd grab a nice bottle of icy bubbly, a couple of glasses, and a picnic blanket, sit somewhere with a nice view of the lake, and enjoy it pre dinner.

And have something ready at home for dessert after.

Inexpensive, fun and romantic

Would not do Le Cedre for an anniversary. Esp if the belly-dancer's on but I guess it's a matter of personal taste.
