Washing machine recommendation

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a particular brand/model of washing machine?

My old washing machine of 13 yrs looks like it is nearing its end of life and I'm now in the market for a new machine.

I'm considering the Miele brand as I've heard good things, plus I've also heard that Germans say that if it involves water then Miele is the way to go.

However another brand that often gets mentioned is Bauknecht.

Thoughts/comments?

Depends on how much you want to spend. Miele run into thousands, but you can get very good machines for just a few hundred. Have a look in Fust and similar stores to compare what you get for your money.

Miele is the best, without any doubt, a friend of mine had one for 17 years, and it never broke down. BUT, a long lasting machine will also mean that you would not receive any new technology, nor settings for washing newly created materials.

I would suggest the Siemens or Bosch machines as being excellent for reliability, but at a lower cost. They are much cheaper in Germany.

Good to hear that someone else thinks these machines are also extremely good.

As for new technology, the machine I have now (LG) is 13 yrs old and to be honest when comparing it with modern machines, mainly in the areas of functionality and effectiveness at cleaning clothes, I don't see much difference.

I own the property I live in and apparently as a result I can deduct the cost of a new machine from my taxes ... reason is that when/if selling the property I have to provide a washing machine.

I recently bought a Siemens dishwasher and now regret doing so and wish I had stuck to my initial idea of Miele.

Is it worth buying in Germany or is the cost saving not worth it and instead buy in Switzerland?

@Medea Fleecestealer - thanks for you input.

If it is tax deductible then buy it here.

When we replaced ours, a couple of years ago, I went the traditional British way, and bought a Hoover 7kg load, from Conforama, on offer for about 500 chufs.

It has settings and washes clothes, and I can afford to replace it a couple or so times for the price of more expensive brands.

Don't get too Swissiefied, and start believing that everything has to be nuclear bomb proof .

I have a Bauknecht 8kg - and will not consider this brand again. It's simply too delicate.

I've replaced the door twice for cracks in the housing, and soon will have to do so again. (Fortunately you can order a replacement part from the manufacturer and so save yourself the cost of a repair visit.)

The printing on the program panel faded away within the first year - good thing I know which button is which, but doG help OH if he decides to try his hand at laundry. The panel has multiple cracks as well.

It seems that the plastic used - on the door and on the panel - just isn't fit for purpose. Whether this is still the case in newer models I don't know.

I had to have the repair guy out once to replace whatever it is that makes the drum spin, and again when the machine just 'froze' mid cycle and couldn't be manually overridden - something to do with the electronics/programming.

But the last straw was when the repair person said that I do too much laundry, and so should have bought a commercial machine. Need a 10K machine to do more than 10 loads a week? Surely you jest...

I have my eye on a Bosch for my next machine. I've been using a Bosch dryer for a few years now and am very pleased with it, so am willing to give their washer a try. Plus they now have a 9 or 10kg machine...

Good luck with your decision.

I have a cheap brand from Conforama, and had to call a repair service while it was still under warranty.

The guy told me to either a) buy a cheap brand like man and change it every 5-6 years, or b) go for an expensive professional model that will last 10-15 years. According to him, the middle-brands are simply not worth the money you pay for them.

We have a direct drive LG with steam function, it works very well, the advantage of the direct drive is it is a lot quieter and less vibration, and from my wife's point of view at the time we bought ours they had one available in red

I have a candy hoover and it works perfectly.

Indesit are a good reasonably priced make as well

Basically they are all pretty good theses days , much like new cars.

I've had 2 bosch machines in 20 years. Loved them. I can only recall them being repaired twice during that time. Then we came to CH and inherited a 4 year old vZug machine of the sort intended for small apartment blocks (even though we were in a house) and it was constantly breaking down. Constantly.

The vZug man charged 80 chf just to come out and we must have spent several thousand during the 5 years we owned it. We were glad to hand it on when we sold the house. All the more startling when I tell you that we had the receipt for the purchase of the machine .. 7495 chf!!!!

So I have gone back to Bosch and am very happy.

But don't, whatever you do, be tempted by vZug

We had Siemens for 7 years without a Problem, but

then sold it to our Nachmieters.

I'm looking to buy a washing machine for my new apartment (assuming it's technically viable, which I trust it will be) and top of my Preis/Leistung list at the moment is a Samsung:

Reasons are A+++ energy rating, very quiet, 10 warranty on the motor and decent load capacity. But likewise, I'm interested in other people's experiences

Does the 10 year warranty on the motor includes the electronic? Because that's what usually goes first in a machine. For instance, mine needed a new 'processor' which works a bit like a sim-card for a phone. The motor was fine, be without the processor it was impossible to use the machine!

My existing Australian LG has served me well but I fancy an upgrade.

Hmmm Samsung ... never considered them ... wonder if anyone on here has experience.

Nor had I for a washing machine, but they've been making pretty good kit in other fields over the last few years

I have seen the same machine branded Bosch & Bauknecht

We have a washer, dryer, fridge, and dishwasher that are all electrolux.

They are not new...and we're renting, so we don't take responsibility for the maintenance, but since we've been here the dryer had a fault which took two visits to fix. Turned out there was a tiny piece of plastic in the condenser outlet, that was blocking it from emptying... it looked like a piece of lego, but was actually an internal part of the machine...

I have no idea of the cost of repairs, but the repair guys have been polite, efficient, happy to consult with someone else when they couldn't find the problem, and always turned up exactly when they said they would.

The dishwasher and fridge recently needed a service, and the guy was fast to diagnose the problem, and very fast to replace what was needed and now it runs like a charm.... again, no idea of the cost, but service-wise, excellent.

Bought a Bosch vacuum cleaner recently. The guy at the shop sold me one that had been marked down that day for clearance, about 40% of the RRP, and I've decided I'm a bit of a fan...
