I'm currently perusing this site for a cheap and cheerful webhosting solution - this is for a club website (.ch domain) which will use a CMS to advertise upcoming events, post photos of past events etc etc.
For bastronomy.com I use Webland.ch (which I am happy with) and for rebgasse.com/reblog I use web-mania.co.uk who are also good.
If anyone has positive experience / recommendations for a hoster / registrar providing a few GB of space, unlimited traffic, mysql, PHP, SSH (nice to have), maillists, reliability and easy-to-access support for under the SFr10/month mark I would be interested to know.
A search of the fora brought up this thread which looks to be a bit long in the tooth, hence me asking.
I use infomaniak.ch for my main business site, great support (in English as well as the local languages) but I have also now started using one.com , a Danish company who are very cheap and can supply and host .ch domains. The site is in English too. Highly recommended so far.
I have most of my various websites hosted on Kreativmedia and am very happy. I think I have something like 5 Gigs of disk space there on one account and three domains hosted. php is supported. There is an email service and all the other usual goodies too but I can't comment on those as I don't use them much. The price is extremely competitive and the web interface is very intuitive and I had no problem setting it up by myself although I'd never done anything of ths sort before and am by no emans an expert. I also have one domain hosted with Tiscali and they are expensive by comparison but also good.
Have been a happy customer of hostpoint.ch. customer support nice, noob friendly (I don't know whether thats required or not) and speaks good English. Can definitely recommend their services.
SH Server standard seemed good to me with a website to post photo albums and blog. They did the domain registration for me too with a ".ch". Data resides in Switzerland.
I've been using one.com for two years, and highly recommend it, One thing to note, when registering, use a US based proxy and you will get the price quotation is USD which comes much cheaper than price in EURO if you connect via switzerland internet provider.
I am also looking for a reliable host but my main concern (other than price obviously) is privacy and data ownership. I know something about US law in regards to this but I know nothing about the letter or spirit of the law in Switzerland. Does anyone have any input on the matter?
Thanks for all the recommends. I am sure all the above do a good job with the actual hosting, I am just wondering what the legalities with respect to their clients are, do they respect privacy etc. For instance, I would never use go daddy or whatever it's called because of their policies (and political leanings).
Both myself and son use evohosting.co.uk, very good customer sevice and cost is good in my opinion. Just had an email from them offering a 25% discount when you sign up for a year if you quote 'SPRING2009' at checkout.
Please note I have no conection with them other than being a satisfied customer of theirs.
what would the most affordable and I guess most widely used service to host a website in Switzerland be? in other words, the corresponding Switzerland version of what GoDaddy may be in the US?
No host genuinely gives unlimited data (you'll simply be cut off and dumped if you high bandwidth) - you're better off finding one that gives you a generous limit.
