Does anybody know where I can buy simple carbon steel wok in Geneva (or on .ch site) ? I can not find them anywhere here ! Shops only have expensive iron cast models or models with Teflon, porcelain, etc. coating which I don't need.
Thank you
Rustem.
I sympathise. Not tried to buy one here, but it's very annoying that the shops don't seem to have the 'real thing'. Even plain steel ones that I have seen here and elsewhere mainly seem to be flat-bottomed things, and fundamentally if you're using a wok properly then it needs to be round-bottomed and to be used over a naked flame.
Using the flat-bottomed ones on an electric ceramic hob is fine, of course, but if that's all you're doing then you might as well just get a large frying pan (skillet for the USians) and have done with it.
Mine will shortly be coming out of the cupboard when we finally, after years of planning, get our new kitchen sorted out in a couple of months. Proper range gas cooker with a central 5kw gas burner and wok ring. God, how I've missed that. Shame they don't do it in the dark blue that we used to have back in the UK, but still.
You need to look for an Asian shop. The majority of them I have seen in ch sells cheap plain woks
Ikea sells them for 7 CHF I think. Or Carrefour in France for less then 5 euros.
I hate this thread. Just when I was starting to think that electric hobs weren't actually the spawn of the devil, he's just turned up asking where his son is.
It's here. In my kitchen. Where the f/cking gas hob should be.
They do not have carbon steel woks, only "teflon" ones.
I will try asain shops in Geneva, but I think they only sell food, not kitchenware.
I am lookig for something like this :
http://www.amazon.com/Carbon-Wok-Hel...9&keywords=wok
I have not seen a Teflon coated Wok at Ikea, only the simple carbon steel ones. In fact, I own two of them. Of no use to me though with these induction stove tops.
Hi, I tried to search again,
http://www.ikea.com/ch/fr/search/?query=wok The result shows only 4 woks, all of them are black inside, it means that are not pure carbon steel, but have some coating (sorry, it may be not Teflon but some other coating, which means it will come off eventually. Also means it can not be heated to more that 200-230 C.)
Plus, as per my comment earlier, they're all flat-bottomed ones to fit on electric hobs. completely misses the point of a wok.
I did a search
wok en acier suisse
and got to a French site that sells all sorts of woks, including steel, with delivery to Switzerland (or get delivered to friend/colleague in France). Try it

Flat-bottom would be fine as I could use it on induction stove, which apparently works good for stir-fry.
Oh. Well you're not going to be getting the high temperatures you mentioned earlier then, are you?
My cheap and very old asian wok has a slightly flat bottom and works really well on my induction stove.
I don't even have it on the hottest setting.
You can also get a concave induction hob especially for a wok.
I am. Induction heats up to 250 C. It can heat even higher, but they put safety mechanism to cut it at 250.
Must say all the woks I've looked at say can't be used on induction.
Is the one in my link what you are looking for?
I warped mine on an induction...but that was just me.
120 EURO???! For a basic wok?
That should cost closer to 12 Euros... if I am taking all Swissness into account maybe 50 CHF in an Asian store. (I'd know where to look in Zurich, but have no idea about GE... sorry)
This is insane. The real price of this wok is 15 USD !
So they can hot enough to warp metal but not hot enough to cook a bit of thinly sliced chicken and some peppers?
AceWon, have you actually used a wok on an induction stove or are your negative posts just conjecture?
