It’s more complicated than that. I think her main goal is to change the citizenship law.
Over 200 non-RN French candidates who qualify for the second round have stood down hoping the remaining candidate will get their votes to push out the RN.
A Harris poll today claims the far right alliance will not get a majority in the French second round election
Inshallah as they say in France
Whatever, Macron will be President until 2027
I am replying to my own post.
It seems this tactic worked according to the latest forecast and the RN will be third with circa 120 seats versus the current 89,
To misuse a French saying *vive la difference"
Quel dommage
The French will soon be able to retire at 55.
They’ll have no money but at least they’ll be able to retire.
Mon Dieu!!
I’m sure they can find the money somewhere. They manage to spend for Covid and Ukraine, why not their own retirees?
The tactic “worked” only on the surface. This ugly political engineering has brought an “alliance” between Macron and Communists, something that has no chance of working. Le Pen has doubled her MPs and will now be in an extremely comfortable position to attack a government which by all accounts will be highly dysfunctional. Macron is no longer leading the initiative, he’s following the events which he himself unleashed.
So yeah, brilliant move.
Meanwhile, this weird multi country far right alliance has become the third strongest party in the EU parliament according to ARD.
Somehow I get the feeling that the Trump presidency in 2016 was a catalyst that has made the right wingers Salonfähig.
Well, I dunno if its weird. What’s more weird is an unelected administrator (von der Leyen) conspiring behind closed doors with someone who lost his majority (Macron) to exclude the right, which has more political weight than either of them. Makes you wonder what is the new definition of democracy then?
Also makes you wonder how shortsighted “mainstream” politicians are. You don’t win votes by political machinations but by catering to what voters are concerned about. What is utterly annoying about these “machinators” is that they continue to ignore what voters are concerned about even further fueling the right and annoying even “mainstream” voters like myself
Factually false and for the third time an unfortunately repetition of hard right talking points.
- Macron is 3rd in France in the EU elections 2) von der Leyen is not directly elected by voters 3) the right was excluded from top positions discussion which was held at closed doors (for them).
All facts. Whether you don’t like them is pretty much irrelevant. Ignoring the right is the worst they (“mainstream” politicians) can do as it fuels them even more.
Even more, Macron pathetic political engineering is failing not only Europe, but France as well. He’ll now have to find a way to work with outright communist while leaving Le Pen in a very comfortable position as a leading opposition party, doubling its share and not having to deal with profound problems which Macrons government will inevitably fail to address.
I said it three times before and this will be the last. The decision to go with von der Leyen as the candidate has been taken by representatives of the EPP (Christian Democrats), Renew (Liberals including Macron’s party) and S&D (social-dems) factions. Together they have a majority in the EP. Von der Leyen Meloni’s party is part of ECR, so not even part of this “coalition”. Why would Meloni have to be part of this discussion? Von der Leyen will still have to be confirmed by a full vote of the EP. If the right had the votes, they could have put together an own candidacy.
I understand it can be confusing that the mechanisms of a supra-national institution like the EU are different from national mechanisms. That is the way it is and has been since the Maastricht treaty.
Not correct.
He is president until 2027 and is still leading.
“French President Emmanuel Macron has asked his prime minister, Gabriel Attal, to remain in post “for the time being to ensure the country’s stability”, after election results left no party with an outright majority.”
