Wireless with Cablecom for Dummies

Hi all,

I've checked the posts and couldn't find anything, but appologise if it's there and I missed it.

We have internet via Cablecom, and was wondering if anyone can recommend a wireless set up for this provider, and the best place to source it.

Probably the best way to do it is to plug a Wifi router into the cablecom modem and go from there.

I concur. Your cablecom modem has no idea if it is connected to a PC, PS3, Nintendo Wii or a WiFi router. Cablecom will sell you a wireless router. When I used their web site to try to replace my modem with a wireless one, they cancelled my contract.

you are one step away from having a wireless network: you just need a wireless router. this is a little box that plugs into one of the open connections on the back of your modem.

You do not need to buy the router from cablecom, this will be more fuss than it is worth. Just pop into interdiscount and ask for one. They probably stock them from either siemens or netgear, both are fine.

a wireless router works to standards called B, G, and N. Most routers out there just have B and G. B is an old slower standard, G is the current fine one and N is a faster one which is just gaining popularity. Just get a B/G one, it is perfectly good enough and what 95% of people have.

When you get home you will see that the router has an installation disk. You dont actually need this. Routers are plug and play which means you plug it in and off you go. However, unfortunately its not quite that simple, you have to set it up and the way you do this is by finding something called the IP address. this will be in the manual that comes with the router, and will look like something like http://192.168.9222 . If you dont find it in the manual, just type into google the model number of your router and type ip address also.... eg "Siemens S135 IP address" and normally it will pop up somewhere.

In other words, it looks a bit like a www. address that you would type into internet explorer.... and thats what you do. This is the address of the router. Once you get there, you need to set up the security settings, that is, give your wireless network a name and a password, otherwise your neighbours could use it.

Then you are done!

I have a Brand new Wireless 'N' router with 4-port Giga Switch that would do the job nicely if you are interested.

My new installation should have come with just a ADSL modem so I ordered this box to give me wireless and multiple ports, but then they installed a 4-port wireless box for me.

Make sure you ask for one that is for a cable modem as well. The ADSL/analog phone box won't work with Cablecom.

Just hook up an Apple airport express or airport extreme base-station. They're very easy to set up, secure and the radiation levels can be reduced by lowering the transmission power (hardly anyone needs 100% power to cover an apartment).

They also have great compatibility - I've had plenty of issues with Netgear and Linksys APs, will never buy one of these again).

Make sure you enable WPA2 security. I'd also recommend to use MAC-address access control (in addition to WPA2 - WPA2 is an absolute necessity!)

We have just had bluewin installed, with a new box, so our 9 month old one is just sitting here if anybody wants it.

I originally asked about wireless/cablecom connections, but now am able to do something about it. So the question is the same, just in case anything has changed or a greta product is available.

I did have some pm's on it but I have manage to lose them....doh!!! So if the person who pm'd me wants to give me shout that would be great.

I have the following Wireless router http://www.pcp.ch/D-Link-DI-524-1a12191321.htm connected to a cablecom ADSL modem with digital phone.

Works fine and the D-link setup interface is really easy to follow. Small trick is in the setup menu it asks if the router needs to clone the IP address, click yes else it won't work whilst cablecom helpline tells you not to do this... go figure.

Hi all,

I've read the threads, and there's a heap of info' on wireless, but here's the things...I'm computer illiterate, and lots of it is very technical. I can fly around some programs, but when it get's technical, my eyes glaze and I go all Homeresk.

I'm actually in CH now, I want to get a Wireless router sorted out this week....but which one...there are heaps, with I would presume different features & vastly differing prices. Basically were on 5 meg Cablecom, and runing 2 laptops and a desktop, it's just for surfing, email, and of course learning on EF, no Star Warsy type stuff or internet gaming. We use Skype for contacting the UK, but that's a pain if the computers not on, so compatable...and simple set phone that we could use for Skype etc.

So if anyone has any product combination/recommendation/shops that would be fantastic. Thanks in advance

I use a Dlink Wireless router ( I think it is a 624 model Atheros chipset ) with the Cablecom Scientific Atlanta ( Cisco ) cable modem, and have no issues as long as I:

a) Disable DHCP on the Dlink 4 port wireless router

b) Connect the Dlink wireless router ( only from any of its LAN port, not the WAN port! ) using a straight through RJ45 cable to the Cable modem's LAN port

I use VOIP / SIP behind this Dlink router and has not given me any major issues.

I am sure it is possible with other brands of wireless router / access points.

It's new, and needs a modem input. I bought it in preparation of my ADSL upgrade, then the system installed by Swisscom made it redundent.
