I have been given (what I assume) a good job opportunity, for 140K. I will be going with my soon to be wife.
She hasn't found a job there yet, but we are both working now and saving a bit before going there.
I have planned to take all expenses for both of us on me and I wanted to know, other than taxes and mandatory health inssurances what other things should I think off. This is my basic list (assuming max price):
1- Appartement 1 bedroom, 1 dining room, kitchen: 1800 (I would like to know which location would you suggest in Zurich...I worked there but never lived there)
2- Internet: 200
3- Phone: 150
4- Food Groceries (and other home cleaning supplies etc...): 1300
5- Going out: 500
6-Movie cards: 60 (30 chf illimited at pathe)
7- Bank account: 80 (with 2 credit cards)
8- Home insurance: 200
9- Medical supplies: 200 (I exagerate)
10- Clothing: 200
11- Health Club: 100
12- Electricity, Water, Gas: 200

What's the point of your post, to tell us all your earning Chf 140k/year ?
Great, good for you, and you still need our help to make out some rather silly little budget including 2 x Chf 30.-- for movie cards. It's quite common to leave more as a tip in a restaurant (non-budgeted).
Some things are overpriced:
Internet 200? Even 50 is high
With 140k for 2 ppl in some house, going out, gym, cinema it is enough.
Now if you are like Grenoble, Marseilles with 100k it will be going down in lifestyle.
You need help...fast! Get off the forum for a bit so that you don't get absorbed by it
So to answer you without taking any offense from you:
- No I am not showing off what I earn, I know its good, but I don't know how it goes in zurich
- if you pay more tips than that, than good for you. I might do the same when I understand how things work there.

Zurich is a really nice, expensive city, but I a mostly looking for quality of life

What about transportation? I still don't understand on the website of ZVV how they define the zones internally to the city of zurich or outside like winterthur etc...
Don't forget (compulsory) medical insurance (min 500 CHF a month) that covers only partially. This month I had to go to the doctor and really hesitated because of cost. The system is very unfair.

What I can't understand is the premium that needs to be paid even with these high prices.
But we have to follow the rules, let's hope I manage to build up something proper for a good start. If the first step works, its all up from there
Not really, I just didn't want to put taxes in the budget, mostly because it is mandatory.

Note that that's two people (200-250 per person, Zurich rates). Plan on 675 a year per person for a tram pass.
You'll enjoy Zurich on that salary, but you won't be living incredibly. You'll have a pretty darned good lifestyle when the missus starts working.

That sounds a lot per month - I think I only pay about 300 a year.
A pretty good lifestyle until they have to start paying for childcare! Now that is expensive. Oh and you might want to check out your tax situation if your soon to be wife plans to work. There are no tax breaks here, you actually pay more when you marry.
I believe it's everywhere the same. Here in France we won't get any tax breaks either. Plus basically in France we don't pay everything from the source, we pay the extra for the previous year with what we make the current year.
And knowing that every latin country is not in good financial situation, I think taxation is gonna wipe middle class.
So I wouldn't mind paying taxes, I just want to be sure that politicians don't abuse it and make me pay their mistakes.
That's what I like in Switzerland (in most cases) you know why you are paying.
Looks all pretty sensible, like there are people out there who can indeed use the search funtion :-). Most of it is about right by my guesstimates. Your food / cleaning supplies might be a tad over (or not if you like red meat at every meal) and your internets sound a little expensive. Did you throw in yourr 10 chf /month per person for the privathauptflich insurance (personal liability)? It's a good idea to have it...
