Ordinary Naturalisation in Switzerland

@Touspourununpourtous
My timeline is similar to yours, in VD (Lausanne). After getting the préavis favorable de bourgeoisie from my commune in February of this year, I got letters from both etat civil then Canton in March telling me that a mandatory “procédure d’enregistrement à l’état civil” has been started.

I had 90 days to provide a set of apostilled documents and the naturalization process was basically paused until this procedure was over. Took me a bit of time to gather the documents, which I sent in courrier recommandé around mid April. Approximately 3 weeks later, 6th May, I got the following mail (see picture attached)

Just an update, I received my invitation for the Grundkenntnisstest, which will happen in about 5.5 weeks (City of Zurich). So my timeline currently is:

End 11/23 - Application submitted
Early 2/24 - Status switched to Vorprüfung (Pre-Check)
Late 4/24 - Application sent to Gemeinde
Early 8/24 - Invitation to Grundkenntnisstest received.

It seems that the the process in the City of Zurich has generally become longer again - on 2020-22 it was for most between 12-16 months. now it seems the average is returning closer to 16-18 months.

great info, thanks for the update!!!

I have another friend down the road in St. Prex who got his bourgeoisie in Feb aswell and the Etat civil letter in march, he didnt have any updates or documents to send and they still havent got back to him… I Think there is no method to the madness, it’s just wait and see and hope for the best

Good Luck. you have enough time to learn all the questions. Just downlaod the app and use not just the free version but also the paid version for zurich city, Zurich kanton and swiss as whole. i did that and got 50 out of 50 correct answers with in 15 minutes. i took another 5 minute for revision and then submitted it.

Again good luck

Q 1. How much time does the candidate have to answer the 50 questions?
Ans. If i am not wrong 45 Minutes. but she told people usually finishes within 30 min. i did mine within 15 minutes and i took another 5 min for revision.

Q2… Is the test on a table or a computer?
Ans. it is on a tablet in Zürich City.

Q3.Is the final result shown after answering the last question?
Ans. Once you finish answering all the questions and whenyou reach the end you have to then press the submit button. there you will have your result.

Q4. Does the candidate receive a certificate with the result after completing the test?
Ans. No. you wont get any certificates.

The officer (only 1 person) with whom i had my interview and test, told me that she is satisfied with my answers and i’ve passed the interview. TOLD ME, i will get a confirmation( Citizenship of Zürich town) in couple of weeks. which i did recieved exactly after 2 weeks. i dont know if thats the case everyone else.

How long does it generally take to prepare for the knowledge test? I wonder if we should prepare already before the appointment? thanks in advance

Sooner the better. but usaully one month is enough to go through all the areas of topics regarding basic knowledge of switzerland. And you get also around a month or bit more when you recieve the invitation. Go through Gemeinde, Kanton and CH Switzerland as whole in the app. they are all seperate area of topics. do the app learning and then App test and try to get 100 % in all the topics. With the invitation letter they have QR code for the EInbürgerungsApp. which includes (i guess) the gemeinde u r in. otherwise the app only shows kanton (in my app). i did did use the QR code they provided in the brochure.
gud luck

The naturalization ceremony is over, and we are Swiss now after 18 months. Now, I need to wait three days before booking an appointment at the biometric center for the passport and ID. Does anyone know if I need to register each family member separately, or can I make a single request for myself and bring the rest of the family? If it’s the former, I’m worried we might not be able to find enough available slots close to each other. Thanks.

Hi all
Would like to know if you get online status update before you recieve the Approval letter from SEM??
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I never got any approval letter from SEM. I noticed on my account that the status changed from Prüfung Bund to Schlussprüfung.

There was also a message on the web platform from Cantonal authorities that they re performing checks and they will let me know if they need anything.

Should one normally receive a letter of confirmation from SEM?

I think one recieves letter from Kanton that the SEM has finished performing Checks and has given Approvel. BTW when was status change that you got? i think you should recieve a letter but i was not sure if its before or after online status

Status change was 2 months ago. Maybe what you are referring to is the online message.

In which Gemeinde or City are you in?

Don’t want to disclose too much info. I am in the canton of Zurich, in Bezirk Horgen.

Hi, same here, I didn’t get a letter either. I didn’t get any notification either. I just happened to check the online platform and saw that the status had changed from “Prüfung Bund” to “Schlussprüfung”. I think this is a “new” way of notification (without letter). I can imagine that in the future everything will be communicated online.

(fyi: i am in the Kanton Zurich, city Zurich)
