Swiss Weather!

Now by Dietikon, maybe you will need your brolly - so long as it is all plastic and not metal.

WTF with the wind? Meteo prediction mentioned 20-30 kmh and this is way above. I’m not walking in the forest this afternoon.

Also, I washed the apartment windows last week. Rain earlier this morning left them yellow from all the precipitated pollen hahaha

I’m currently on the train from Zurich HB to Geneva Cornavin, just departing Lausanne. It’s snowing so hard between Romont and Palézieux, it feels like we’re back in winter. I’ve never seen anything like it this year, between January and April. With the major flooding in Dubai, Russia, and Kazakhstan and now mid-April snow in parts of Switzerland, the weather is just nuts!

After a week of mid-20s and lots of dust, we have 0C and lots of new snow–35 cm, which may revive the resorts that closed last week. However, previously scheduled cable car maintenance will probably interfere with that. Stubai has over 5 meters!!

It’s snowing here…(some sort of snow)

Once they are shut they usually stay that way. By this time of year they sell very few day/week cards and the season card owners don’t bring any fresh funds in.

Yes, such big snow flakes…by mid April

Did you pay attention to this change during the last ten years? My mom says it’s slowly becoming the norm - expect a snow in April which can kill certain trees and crops - the snow itself is not harmful, it’s only the combo with frosts or freezing air temperatures.

Is your mom a meteorologist? To my layman eyes, it is perfectly normal to have a few cold and snowy days in April. Data is for Zurich-Affoltern, they grey area shows the historic range.

And to protect plants from freezing, it is an old trick to spray them with water so that the ice forms a protective layer. Really nothing new.

My surprise comes from having near 25+°C days not long ago. But, my whole perspective of weather around 45N latitude is 10 or so years

I do remember running the SOLA race with work colleagues some years ago. I ran (euphemism) the Uetliberg climb, had rain at the beginning, hail by the mid, and snow while arriving to the top. And, it was the first days of May.

People from Jura tell snow can come any time of the year.

Lol, no. She has worked in auditing. Probably rarely had any time left to muse about weather change.

Yeah, that was my point too.

April seems to be famous round these parts for being a bit of a wild month; snow one day, bathing suits the next. “April, April, der macht was er will.” or something like that.

They have been known to re-open, as long as they can finish their scheduled maintenance in time for the opening of hiking season.

(Of ski slopes) There’s one here (Rochassons, down to Pre ls Joux parking, part of the Châtel ski area) that I’m pretty sure must have been closed Monday and Tuesday - on Sunday after around 1400, with temps in the mid 20s, it was virtually unskiable, with just a couple of snow strips left near the bottom. It’s now marked as open, with a good 30cm of snow fallen in the last two days, so should be good for next weekend as well.

But that’s really unusual, once they make the decision to close the lifts they will let the staff go and end up the season for most of them, to reopen needs that the piste is being maintained. In this case the Pierre Longue chair would have stayed open anyway, for download as well as upload, so with the forecast as it was I imagine they knew it would be worthwhile to reopen the piste with the new snow and 20 degree lower temperatures.

On the PdS live piste map you can see lift and piste status, with some marked simply as ‘closed’ while others are ‘out of operation’ meaning they’re done for the season.

Drove to Lindau, which is as close to Switzerland as damn it and I had to plow my way through 20 cm of snow on the A96, as luck would have it my appointment to change tires was shoved off for two weeks. But you could tell who still had winter tires and who had already changed.

Just had a little dusting here. Melted off the ground/pavement by the time we got up, but was still visible on cars and building roofs.

Funnily enough, I had a meeting with an older Swiss lady who said exactly that.
Thankfully, this unhinged April seems to be a bit nicer today.

Check your forecasts. Here it’s getting even colder over the weekend, with another dump of snow tonight and continuing the next couple of days. Will definitely be out skiing though, will be the last chance this season.

Yep, I spoke too soon. It was just “a moment of grace” :joy:…but then it started to rain and it was quite windy. Now is just raining… I got back home and I checked my forecasts: rain and snow on weekend…so it makes sense to go skiing…

At least here in the north, the weather in the mountains looks horrid.
