Tesla EV discussion

That was quick.

It took a few months to grow from weird social media corners of the internet to the most conformist media of all: TV.

What went up in smoke? Resale prices and the myth of rational consumers.

I suppose only negative news on Tesla ever makes it here or anywhere else.

Meanwhile their shares (TSLA) have been steadily climbing and closed last night at US$347.68. Up over 4% on the day. My own holding is up 35% - less drop in the value of the dollar over the last 18 months…

To be honest, that’s the same for any news, here or anywhere else.

The share price is really interesting. Either it’s a squeeze/melt-up thing or there’s still a lot of hope/confidence.

I still like the cars and see little or no alternatives in their price bracket. But they really have to update and upgrade the battery tech at least.

And the fact that I like something is usually more a bad sign than good sign…

Tesla is not only cars. Battery storage and robots to mention but 2 expanding future areas…

Putting Musk and his politics to one side, do you really believe Tesla is still ahead of the Chinese? Just taking the BYD Seal and Sealion as examples, they are equivalently priced, better built, more luxurious, similar range, the latest BYD battery tech (which incidentally I have in my SR Model Y) and they dispense with annoying omissions like instrument cluster, indicator stalks etc.. The only thing they lack is the Supercharger network.

These cars are similar in spec to the Model S but sit in the Model 3/Y price bracket so very good value IMHO.

Must be the latter, or something else entirely. Short interest is only 1.3 the daily volume, it’s been at around one for at least one month.

I don’t know. Who does maintenance and repairs for BYD’s cars in Switzerland?
The current state of EVs is that when something “unexpected” happens, the local mechanics can do jack shit and need to escalate it to HQ (whether that is Stuttgart, Texas/Fremont, Wolfsburg or wherever HQ is).

Tesla still has a huge user base and IMHO the best-connected community as well as a very well developed ecosystem with 3rd-parties knowing a lot of stuff.

Smarts aren’t selling that well either, even though on paper they have a lot of the things Tesla is missing (and then some). It seems their software-department isn’t that great in delivering the “last 20%”.

Some updates to vehicle technology is needed, though, for Tesla to continue to be relevant.

There’s a BYD Switzerland, that offers BYD Assistance:

I’ve seen that. But no word who they’re partnering with.

I agree that when it comes to OTA software updates, Tesla is best in class. However much of what they deliver are just incremental improvements to things which were already lacking e.g. auto wipers, phantom braking etc.. They release beta products and then iteratively improve them.

Welcome to the “Software is eating the world”- world.

I just checked my Tessie stats and I’ve received 25 software updates since March 2024 (excessive?!?).

Each time I have to go through the rigmarole of using my phone as a wifi hotspot to download a massive update to fix an unidentified issue or small improvement to the UI. I don’t know why it cannot do this while I sleep using its LTE data connection, I do pay for Premium connectivity after all?

Another European company decides to stop using Tesla:

Company returns entire Tesla vehicle fleet because of Elon Musk

Tscherning, a large Danish construction company, announced that it returned its entire corporate fleet of Tesla vehicles because of Elon Musk.
The company added that it doesn’t want to be “associated with the values and political direction that currently accompany the Tesla brand.”

It will instead buy “European alternatives” to Tesla vehicles.

AFAIK it only downloads “emergency” updates via LTE - the rest requires WIFI.
Thankfully, my neighbor installed an AP in the garage (I assume his Energica electric motor bike also got updates from time to time, at least until the manufacturer went belly-up).

Apple Music and Premium Connectivity are the two non-essential subscriptions I have.

I doubt they just parked the vehicles in front of the Tesla store and put the keycards in the letterbox.

I would assume their leasing contracts have ended and they got a good offer from VW.

The fleet business was never Tesla’s strong side (due to low residual values and other issues) and I believe it’s pretty much dead in Europe now, apart from small businesses maybe.

In Germany, over 90% of the newly registered ICE VW Passat Kombi vehicles were commercial leasings. I would guess the number is even higher for ID.7 et.al.

I think that is exactly what they did.

They should put an ‘auto-pilot’ return feature so that the cars can self-drive back to Tesla.

They can. It’s just not legal in Europe.

It seems it’s rather easy to return a lease in Denmark.

I hope that they also ditch iPhones, Google services and Android devices and Amazon Webservices as these CEOs also publicly support Trump (in his grab for Greenland…which is probably the straw that broke the camel’s neck here).

And Fred has another hit-piece. I guess if not for those, nobody would read his site anymore as it’s an atrocity to the eye…
